When it comes to Fukuoka’s nightlife, “Yatai” (food stalls) are a must-see, but another of **Fukuoka’s two major gourmet giants** is definitely “Motsunabe.” The plump offal, thoroughly simmered, and the rich flavor of vegetables melted into the soup provide an unforgettable experience once tasted. The Tenjin and Nakasu areas, in particular, are a fiercely competitive zone with many famous restaurants. While ramen as a late-night snack at a yatai is great, there must be days when you want to thoroughly enjoy motsunabe.

In this article, we introduce **5 carefully selected Motsunabe restaurants in the Tenjin/Nakasu area that Fukuoka locals confidently recommend as absolutely not to be missed**. We’ll thoroughly explain the reservation-required popular spots, each restaurant’s unique characteristics, and flavor profiles.
Fukuoka’s Representative Delicacy “Motsunabe”: Its Charm and How to Eat It

Motsunabe is a hot pot dish featuring fresh beef or pork offal as the main ingredient, cooked with plenty of vegetables like chives, cabbage, and burdock root, in a special soup base. Its history is old, having been popular as a stamina-boosting dish in post-war Fukuoka. Although it’s now famous nationwide, Motsunabe in its birthplace, Fukuoka, is exceptional.

The soup flavors are broadly divided into three main types: **soy sauce-based, miso-based, and mizutaki-style (with ponzu)**. Each restaurant pursues its unique flavor with secret recipes. The plump, collagen-rich offal has no unpleasant odor and a melt-in-your-mouth texture. Since it’s packed with vegetables, it’s also a great source of nutrition.

Check Out the History, Opening Hours, and Rules of Food Stalls in Nakasu and Tenjin

A classic Fukuoka sightseeing experience is enjoying food stalls in Nakasu and Tenjin. Once common across the country, food stalls faced hygiene issues post-WWII and were ordered to close by GHQ in 1950. However, in Fukuoka, stall owners formed an association and negotiated with the health department and the then Ministry of Health, eventually gaining permission to operate in 1955.

Thanks to the efforts of our predecessors, Fukuoka’s food stalls survived. They are popular among tourists for enjoying Fukuoka cuisine such as Hakata tonkotsu ramen, bite-sized gyoza, and yakitori. The charm of food stalls includes cozy seating and lively conversations with strangers.

However, note that many food stalls close on rainy days or during holidays. Check the official SNS of the food stalls for updates.

Opened in 2017, “Hakata Yatai Nakasu Jūban” is a relatively new food stall. It offers menus in foreign languages and accepts credit cards and QR code payments, making it accessible for tourists from Japan and abroad.

They also provide receipts and invoices, making it suitable for business travelers. The menu’s popularity lies in the ability to enjoy local Fukuoka dishes such as ramen, motsunabe, gyoza, mentaiko, and local beers all at once.

Ramen is a must-try. From the classic Nagahama ramen to hearty chashu ramen and grilled ramen, originally from food stalls, you will be spoiled for choice.

They also have great services for families. Parents visiting with children under elementary school age who order ramen will get a free “children’s ramen” for the kids. It’s the perfect place for families to enjoy Fukuoka food stalls.

Hearty Tempura at a Classic Stall “Yatai Mori” (Nakasu)

Founded in 1973, “Yatai Mori” is a tempura-focused food stall in the Nakasu area. Passing through the noren curtain, you’ll be greeted by the owner with the sounds of sizzling oil and old Japanese enka music.

The showcase is filled with seafood that is grilled and served, along with skewered dishes like pork belly. The grilled mentaiko (spicy cod roe) rice bowl is perfect for the end of a meal.

The must-try dish is their signature tempura. While you can order individual items, we recommend trying a variety with the assorted platter.

Enjoy the crispy tempura while it’s hot. It’s pleasing that the assortment includes a balanced mix of vegetables and seafood. If the timing is right, you can also try the seasonal popular dish, kaki tempura (oyster tempura).

A Must-Try Gyoza Specialty “Take-chan” (Nakasu)

One of the popular stalls in the Nakasu area is “Take-chan.” This food stall, run by a father and son duo who branched off from the long-established Hakata bite-sized gyoza restaurant “Hōuntei,” is beloved by locals and celebrities alike.

Every dish, carefully prepared over time, is delicious. Besides the signature gyoza, other notable dishes include the famous dote-nabe and oden, slowly simmered in white miso. These are must-try items that showcase the meticulous preparation.

If you visit Take-chan, you must try the gyoza. The filling, a mixture of pork, sweet onions, and a hint of garlic, is wrapped in a chewy skin and pan-fried to perfection.

Although each serving of gyoza consists of eight pieces, they are small, making them easy to eat even if it’s your second stop of the night. Many repeat customers seek out this taste, often leading to long lines.

Run by a welcoming husband and wife, “Yatai Donryu” offers classic menu items like tonkotsu ramen, yakitori, and oden.

Open until 2:30 AM, it’s perfect for a second stop or for a bowl of ramen to finish the night. The rich yet light tonkotsu ramen is ideal for post-drinking.

Alongside tonkotsu ramen, oden is also popular at Donryu. The “oden assortment” includes several types of ingredients such as daikon, konjac, egg, and gyoza tempura.

The oden is cut into bite-sized pieces, making it easy to share, while each person can have their own bowl of ramen. The oden, soaked in flavorful broth, is comforting and has a gentle taste. Especially on cold winter days, it’s a heartwarming delight.

The Originator of Grilled Ramen “Kogane-chan” (Tenjin)

Among Fukuoka’s food stalls, “Kogane-chan” stands out for its long lines. Established in 1968, this popular stall is frequently featured in various media and is beloved by both tourists and locals.

The extensive menu includes oden, yakitori, gyoza, mentaiko tamagoyaki, and dote-yaki (miso-simmered beef tendon). Expect long lines, so come with plenty of time.

The “grilled ramen,” made by mixing boiled noodles with tonkotsu broth and sauce on a griddle, is a signature dish of Fukuoka food stalls. Kogane-chan is the originator of this dish, and many visitors come specifically for it.

Grilling the noodles concentrates the umami and richness of the tonkotsu broth. Despite being ramen, it’s enjoyed as a snack rather than a meal.

The most popular dish at Kiryu is “Mochimochi Gyoza.” These round-shaped gyoza resemble Umegae Mochi, a beloved treat in Dazaifu, a popular tourist spot in Fukuoka. As the name suggests, the skin has a chewy, mochi-like texture, and the juicy meat filling bursts with flavor when you bite into it.

Bartenders Welcome You at “Yatai Bar Ebichan” (Tenjin)

As you pass through the curtain, you’ll be greeted by a bartender in a tuxedo. This is “Yatai Bar Ebichan,” a unique bar among the many diverse food stalls in Fukuoka. With moody background music and a plethora of alcohol bottles, it feels just like a real bar!

They offer around 600 kinds of drinks, including cocktails and Western liquors. They also have mocktails (non-alcoholic cocktails), so even those who don’t drink can enjoy themselves.

Besides drinks, pay attention to the food as well. They offer seasonal oden, daily specials, tuna steak, chili beans, and various other snacks, both Japanese and Western.

One recommended dish is the “Camembert Cheese with Marmalade.” The cheese is baked in an oven until it’s melted and gooey, paired with sweet and slightly bitter marmalade for an adult taste.
What is Yanagawa Eel?

Yanagawa has long been famous as a tourist town.

You should definitely try a boat ride through the historic town with a castle in the center of the city and many old-fashioned historical buildings.

Along with river cruising, there are some gourmet that you must try when you visit Yanagawa.

That is eel cuisine.

Eel steamed in a bamboo basket is a specialty that you can’t get anywhere else.

The grilled eels are cut into bite-size pieces.

It is cut into bite-size pieces and placed on top of steamed white rice and steamed again.

This is a cooking method developed by our ancestors in the days when there was no such thing as a microwave oven, and they wanted to enjoy the same taste of freshly cooked eels even after they had cooled down.

The Yanagawa style is to repeat the process of grilling the whole raw eel and then dipping it in the sauce.

The characteristic feature of this process is that the sauce is infused with the concentrated flavor of the eel.

The original Motoyoshiya was established in 1681.

Since its founding, the restaurant has maintained the sauce and cooking method invented by the first owner.

The sauce that has been passed down from the first owner is spread on fluffy white rice, steamed, and topped with grilled eels.

Another feature of this dish is the generous amount of thinly sliced egg, which goes well with the eel and is very colorful.

In addition to the steamed sea eel, you can also have white-baked or kabayaki eel.

In addition to the main store, you can eat at Okibata store in Yanagawa City and the Iwataya store in Fukuoka City.

All of them have an appearance reminiscent of a high-class restaurant.

You can enjoy steamed eel to your heart’s content in a calm, Japanese-style space.

Wakamatsuya

There is a little bit of creativity in the rice with eels.

Wakamatsuya was founded in 1860 during the Ansei era.

It has been in business for over 160 years.

Wakamatsuya’s steamroller is characterized by the taste of eels as well as the white rice.

The white rice is cooked by reducing the amount of water to the utmost limit and then sprinkled with sauce that has been added daily since the establishment of the business, and left to sit for several minutes to allow the flavors to soak into the rice.

You can enjoy the taste of the fluffy texture of the eel that is integrated with the sauce and the white rice with the flavor of the eel soaked into each piece of rice.

Since its establishment, there has been no relocation of the restaurant, and it continues to operate in Okinohata-cho, Yanagawa City, where a beautiful moat spreads out in front of it.

The beautiful Japanese garden in the courtyard, which is lit up at night, is also worth a visit.

In addition to the famous “Seiro-mushi” (steamed rice), there are plenty of a la carte dishes such as kabayaki, unglazed, hone-senbei (rice crackers), and eel rolls.

The restaurant is a great place for lunch and drinks.

Eel dishes with a beautiful view of the city.

Kawayoshi is located in the central area of Yanagawa City, within walking distance of Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station.

It is a famous restaurant that has long been loved by tourists and locals.

Right in front of the restaurant is a moat, which is part of the river cruise course, and a willow tree lined avenue, from which Yanagawa gets its name.

In addition to steamed eel steamed in a bamboo basket, the restaurant also offers a wide variety of a la carte dishes using eels, such as “Uzaku,” which is a dish of shredded eel kabayaki with cucumber and vinegar, and “eel tataki,” which is grilled eel served in mustard vinegar.

The restaurant has a tatami room and private rooms where you can enjoy a meal in a relaxed atmosphere.

It is a great place to visit for lunch, but I recommend it to those who want to enjoy a relaxing evening in Yanagawa.

It’s a little far from the tourist attractions, but it’s about a 10-minute walk from Nishitetsu Yanagawa station and a 7-minute walk from the river rafting terminal in the city.

When you go inside, you can feel the atmosphere of a long-established restaurant, but you can enjoy your meal in a relaxed atmosphere because all the seats are tatami style.

This popular eel restaurant, which also delivers food to the restaurant and is loved by the locals, has a great taste.

The eel steamed in a bamboo basket is 2,550 yen.

If you’re looking for a cheaper price, you can get an eel bowl for 2,000 yen.

The eel steamed in a bamboo basket has a relatively sweet flavor, but Unagi no Tomisan’s dishes are not too sweet.

Unamusu(eel rice ball) that is 540 yen for two eels is also available for takeout.

Inside the restaurant, which has a garden where you can hear the birds chirping and feel the history of the restaurant, you can enjoy your meal in a tatami room with a peaceful nature view.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Yanagawa for unagi is during the cooler months when eel is considered to be at its most flavorful. This period typically spans from late autumn to early spring, offering a delightful culinary experience.

Nearby Attractions

While visiting Yanagawa, don’t miss the opportunity to explore its picturesque canals. Enjoy a traditional boat tour, which offers a serene view of the town’s charming scenery.

BOSS E ZO FUKUOKA is the newest addition to Fukuoka’s PayPay Dome.

The opening of the new restaurant has been postponed for some time, but it will finally open on July 21, 2020.

Sometimes, I hear like this.

Fukuoka has food but no leisure activities…
Fukuoka is fun at night, but there’s nothing to do in the daytime…
Fukuoka’s only tourist attraction is Dazaifu…

In the midst of all this, a new tourist attraction, BOSS E ZO FUKUOKA, has come onto the scene.

Can we really enjoy it?

BOSS E ZO FUKUOKA, located next to the dome

I came to the quiet Fukuoka PayPay Dome which is home of Softbank Hawks, a Baseball team.

Originally, the professional baseball game should have started in spring and the dome was supposed to be bustling with activity.

The professional baseball season has somehow started, but there is still a period of no audience in the dome because of Coronavirus.

In the midst of all this, the newly completed BOSS E ZO FUKUOKA is right next to the Fukuoka PayPay Dome.

It’s right next to the dome.

It’s almost directly connected to the terrace of the dome, and I could to enter the entrance directly from the terrace.

As you enter the entrance, you’ll see a large display.

It’s futuristic and cool!

BOSS E ZO FUKUOKA is a seven-story building with a name of “E・ZO FUKUOKA” meaning “Exciting Entertainment Zone“.

The name “E・ZO” means “Exciting Entertainment Zone”, and each floor has an exciting entertainment zone.

Let’s see if it’s really an exciting entertainment zone!

Team Lab Forest

First of all, I went to “teamLab Forest” on the 5th floor.

It’s a new museum created by TeamLab.

It is divided into “Catching and Collect Forest” and “Forest of Movement”, with a total of 10 artworks on display for you to experience.

This time, I experienced the “Catching and Collect Forest”.

Once inside, there was a fantastic space with plants and animals projected on the entire wall and floor.

The name of this place is “Catching and Collect Forest”.

As the name suggests, you can catch and collect them.

If you download the special app “Catching and Collecting Forest“, you can use your phone to catch them.

When you find an animal, use the app’s camera to aim at it and throw a light arrow into it.

When the arrow hits the animal, it disappears from the wall and enters your phone. ‘Captured successfully!’

I thought, “Hey, what a pity…” but the rule is that the animal has to be released and released back into the forest.

When I released it, I was relieved to see that the dwarf pangolin, which had disappeared once, had reappeared with a bang.

Animals registered in the Encyclopedia can be seen in the smartphone even after they leave the TeamLab Forest.

It makes me want to go collecting animals.

If you succeed in releasing the arrows, you can now use the nets.

If you use your phone to release the net at the shrimp, the net will appear at your feet!

When you do this, you get absorbed in it.

I also got absorbed in catching fish and hunting animals, losing track of time.

It’s a world where you can get moved by just walking around, but once you start using the app, you get swallowed up in this world.

As a 32-year-old boy, I was obsessed with finding animals, setting up arrows and nets, and releasing them into one creature after another.

It was fun.

By the way, the creatures react when you touch them and run away when they notice humans.

In other words, you can do something like this, drive the creatures to the corner of the wall and catch them.

It’s fun after all.

This time, I only experienced the “Catching and Collect Forest”, but the other “Forest of Movement” is a fun where images and the real world are linked together.

I hope you will experience it for yourself.

V-World AREA

The 6th and 7th floors are home to the “V-World AREA“, a state-of-the-art facility with a total of 16 types of virtual content.

There are 10 types of virtual content, the first of in Kyushu.

At first glance, it looks like a game center, but it’s not just an arcade.

Take this Beat Saver, for example.

This is the first machine in Kyushu.

The player wears a VR device and holds a controller in both hands.

The controller turns into a sword in the VR space.

▲Reference.

Players slash blocks flying forward with their two-handed swords to an exhilarating rhythm!

Cut! Cut! It’s the next generation of sonic games.

Another one that stands out is this “Photon Bike“.

This is a racing game that you can enjoy in VR.

I tried it out myself, and it was amazing.

It really feels like riding a motorcycle.

Putting on the VR device, the race starts in a different world.

It’s so much fun, dodging obstacles and flying through big jumps!

Not only does the bike shake, but the wind also comes out.

It’s an immersive experience like no other game I’ve played and I’m hooked.

Next time I go, I’ll definitely give it another try.

There are other interactive games that you can touch and enjoy on the big screen.

There was also a game called “BUG HUNTER” in which you project your own image on the screen and enjoy being the player.

Missiles were being fired one after another from my head while I was standing.

Since my own image is displayed in the screen, the shock of being attacked by an opponent is a little bigger and more emotional.

Once you enter, you can play as much as you want during the time limit.

I think even adults can have a lot of fun.

It’s great for a date.

It was truly an exciting entertainment zone.

The view looking down on the roof of the Fukuoka PayPay Dome.

It was very powerful.

On the day I went to cover the event, it was raining hard and I wasn’t able to experience it, but there was a video.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1276440158133293056

It looks like a great coaster for those who love screaming machine, that’s for sure.

Nobozo ZO is a rooftop climbing and bouldering facility.

The height of bouldering is 3m, so it’s for children, and adults can challenge the 9m high climbing.

It is a tube-shaped slider that wraps around the building of BOSS E ZO FUKUOKA.

I’ve been curious about Sube ZO since I arrived at BOSS E ZO FUKUOKA.

A tube coming out of the building.

The length of the tube is about 100 meters and it slides down to the ground in about 30 seconds.

I couldn’t go to “Fishing ZO” and “Nobo ZO” because of the heavy rain, but I could go to “Sube ZO” somehow.

I wonder what kind of world is waiting for me…..

At last, my turn has come, so I’m going to go!

When you lay down, it slides slowly, and when you wake it up, it slides faster.

I wanted to take a good, safe video, and to be honest, I was a bit scared, so I laid my body down too much.

The cave, which took tens of millions of years to build, is a mystery itself.

You will be overwhelmed by the stalactites hanging down from the ceiling and the glistening water surface under the light.

It’s a hidden vortex that you must visit at least once!

Natural wonders created over tens of millions of years

Senbutsu Limestone Cave were designated as a national natural monument in 1935.

These caves were formed over tens of millions of years by the dissolution of limestone rock due to the action of rain and groundwater.

Inside the cave, you can see the beautiful artistry of nature, including mysteriously shaped stalactites and an emerald river.

The cave is more than 1,200 meters long and stretches for over a kilometer, so each spot is completely different!

It shows its each face in each place and is full of highlights.

Perfect for summer! It’s cool in the cave

The temperature in this limestone cave is 16 degrees Celsius all year round, both in winter and summer!

It’s amazing that it’s this temperature all year long.

The recommended season is still summer.

Once you enter the cave, you will feel as cool as if you are in an air-conditioned room.

And the water is very cold, 14 degrees Celsius, so you can cool down at once.

It’s like an expedition! Always wear short pants.

There are knee deep water points in the cave and narrow places where you have to crawl to get through.

There are also points where you have to shine a light above your head to get through in the dark.

You’ll feel like an explorer.

Short pants are recommended for this reason.

If you don’t have any, wear pants that can be turned up to your knees!

You can borrow Crocs, so you can ware any kind of shoes to go.

How do I get to the Senbutsu Limestone Cave?

Train + Taxi

We recommend taking a combination of train and taxi from JR Kokura Station to Ishiharamachi Station in 28 minutes (380 yen), and from there it’s only a 20-minute taxi ride away.

Car rental

It takes about 20 minutes from Kokura Minami IC.

There are many signs on the way, so you won’t get lost.

One of the advantages of driving is that on the way to the cave, you will pass through the vast karst plateau “Hiraodai” and get off the car.

Of course, if you take a taxi, you will also pass Hirao-dai, so you will have a great view from the window.

Summary

Senbutsu Limestone Cave cave is a hidden vortex that is well known to those in the know.

Every year, the viewing season changes somewhat, so it is necessary to check in advance.

The setting sun falls over the ocean at Miyajihama, and the shrine, the beach, and Ainoshima are connected in a straight line as the sun sets directly over the torii gate and the approach.

It is an Instagrammable spot in Fukuoka that is secretly hot topic on SNS.

This Miike salt lake is not actually a lake.

But, it’s a great Instagrammable spot.

The name “Miike Salt Lake” is derived from the fact that, when the weather conditions are good, the salt mountains and rainwater create a puddle of water that looks just like the real Uyuni Salt Lake.

Miike Salt Lake is a hot topic on SNS for its amazing view

This Miike salt lake was hot on “Instagram“.

The photos posted by people who have actually been there are so beautiful that you can’t help but stare at the stunning view of Miike Salt Lake.

Miike Salt Lake is a hidden tourist spot that has been quietly spreading by word of mouth and is not well known even by Fukuoka residents.

Uyuni Salt Lake in Chile is one of the most popular places to visit in South America.

Miike Salt Lake in Fukuoka is as fantastic as the Uyuni Salt Lake.

If your timing is right, you can see a view of Fukuoka that looks exactly like Uyuni Salt Lake.

You don’t have to go to Uyuni Salt Lake to see the stunning mirrored view of the lake in Fukuoka.

Miike Salt Lake Basic Information (Address, Access, Parking)

Hours of operation: In the morning

It is important to note that there is no parking at all at Miike Salt Lake.

How to go Miike Salt Lake

The only way to get to Miike Salt Lake is by car or on foot from JR Omuta station.

The closest station to Miike Salt Lake is JR Omuta Station in Omuta City, and it takes about an hour to get to the border with Kumamoto Prefecture on the JR Omuta Line.

Miike Salt Lake is off-limits because it’s private property?

Miike Salt Lake is basically off-limits as it is privately owned by a company (Miike Coal Mine).

The reason why Miike Salt Lake is off-limits is because Miike Salt Lake is the site which was closed in 1997.

The name Miike Salt Lake is also not an official name.

It’s not even a tourist attraction.

Since it is privately owned, the official location has not been disclosed.

That’s why Miike Salt Lake is said to be a secret place, an unexplored region.

Try doing a Google Maps search for Miike Coal Mine.

About Permission to enter Miike Salt Lake

So what do you need to do to get into Miike Salt Lake?

As far as I could find out on the internet, who went to Miike Salt Lake, I couldn’t find any information that they entered Miike Salt Lake with a Permission.

It seems to be difficult to formally enter Miike Salt Lake and take photos.

Caution

It is better not to post photos on social networking sites, because taking photos would be evidence of trespassing.

Timing and the Conditions of Superb View of Lake Miike Salt

If you want to take a Uyuni salt lake like photo at Miike Salt Lake, you have to visit on a day when conditions are right.

The conditions are the day after it rained and the early morning of sunny day..

The point is that it is necessary for rainwater to accumulate on the ground in Miike Salt Lake and for the salt pile of Miike Salt Lake to reflect the sun’s rays there.

If there is no rainwater accumulation, it’s just a huge mass of salt.

If conditions are bad, Miike Salt Lake is not Instagrammable.

Summay of Miike Salt Lake

I did some research on Miike Salt Lake in Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture.

A photo posted on “Instagram” made Miike Salt Lake a hot spot.

I found out that if the conditions were right, we could get a beautiful view of Lake Miike Salt Lake, but unfortunately it was difficult to take pictures because it was on private land.

Enjoy the famous river cruise in Yanagawa City, which has the history of a castle town

Located in the Chikugo region of Fukuoka Prefecture, Yanagawa City is about 45 minutes from Fukuoka Tenjin Station on the Nishitetsu Railway.

This area, which flourished as the Yanagawa Clan, is a castle town centered around Yanagawa Castle, which was the castle of the Tachibana clan, the lord of the clan.

The Yanagawa River Cruise, which is a sightseeing tour of the town on a boat with a capacity of 24 passengers, is a specialty of Yanagawa City, as is the “steamed eel in a bamboo basket”.

This boat used on the Yanagawa River cruise is called a “Donko boat” because it resembles a fish goby (donko).

There are four river cruising companies in the city, but this time we will go to “Suigo Yanagawa Kanko” where you can enjoy cruising from Shimohyakucho to Ohana, the residence of the lord of the Yanagawa domain.

From the embarkation and disembarkation area, take off your shoes and get on the Donko boat.

It was in January when I was there, so the boat was kotatsu boat! (Kotatsu boats are available until the end of February.)

There is a brazier under the table which is connected for a long time.

We are about to start our one-hour boat trip.

Today’s boatman is Hisayuki Tsumura, who was born and raised in Yanagawa.

Mr. Tsumura is a boatman for about five years, but he is good at talking and singing!

There was no shaking, and it was warm from the foot of the boat with a kotatsu, and even though it was January, it was not cold at all!

Getting to know other passengers is one of the best parts of river cruising.

Especially on a kotatsu boat, you will feel closer to the boat because you will be surrounded by the same table (except for the kotatsu boat, where there are no tables).

The boatman said, “Where did you come from? You’ve never been to Yanagawa before, have you?

They will show you the way to the restaurant, and tell you “Oh, in that case, you should have eel for lunch! or “How long have you been here?

The tourists on board also joined in the conversation, and it felt like the whole ship was talking to each other.

The two lovely people who were with us at the time of our interview. He said he grew up with her!

Mr. Tsumura’s rod was used to move the Donko boat through the moat.

A willow tree protrudes from the river on the bank of the moat.

Even in winter, the view of the ditch split seems beautiful.

It is said that the lush green willow trees entertain the eyes of tourists in the fresh green season.

After about five minutes of going, a narrow sluice gate appeared.

We’re going through this…?

This is the moat gate of Yanagawa Castle.

From here, the Tachibana clan’s castle is inside and the “inner moat” is entered.

It’s 2.6 meters wide and 3.5 meters high at the sluice gate!

It’s just wide enough! According to the boatman, the volume of water is low today, so there is still plenty of room.

On board, I’m holding up my camera and going, “Wow! “Aaah!

From the heartwarming atmosphere we had just witnessed, there was a thrilling sense of tension!

From there, it’s another wide moat.

This is the start of the “moat tour”.

It is said to have been artificially constructed by Yoshimasa Tanaka, the feudal lord, when he entered Yanagawa Castle in the 1600s.

It is said to be set up to prevent invasion from the enemy, but that’s not all.

Both banks of the moat are private houses. There is a staircase on the moat side of the house and they used to do laundry at the water pumping station.

It was also built as a countermeasure against water damage.

Water of moat is also used for agriculture, fire prevention, and until a long time ago, it was also used for laundry and other daily necessities, so it has been an integral part of the lives of Yanagawa residents.

It’s a part of life that plays an important role for the people of this community.

By the way, if you connect all of these sections together, it’s 930km!

Since the distance between Tokyo and Osaka is about 500km, it is amazing to think that it is like a round trip.

Thrilling to go through 13 bridges! There’s also a place where you can listen to the boatman sing

We went through the sluice gate earlier, but there are 13 other bridges to go through on the course.

This is where the boatman shows off his skills!

The narrowest bridge “Yaemon Bridge”! It’s so exciting to go through such a narrow bridge!

They will sing to you on the long bridge while you cross it.

“Songs of river cruise”, “Yanagawa Ondo”, “Yanagawa Kouta”… Already, this is a truly stunning singing voice!

I wonder if “singing ability” is a requirement for the boatman.

There’s an echo under the bridge, all right? says the boatman, laughing.

He sings aloud while passing through the bridge!

Although he wasn’t under the bridge, he performed a total of four songs.

Listening to the singing is one of the best parts of this river cruise.

You may pass other Donko boats on the way!

There are about 50 boatmen if you include the other shipping companies.

The ages range from 18 years old at the bottom to 80 years old at the top.

It’s fun to meet a new river cruising experience every time you come, because the guides and talks on the boat are different.

It’s also fun to make a stop at the “floating shop”

This is the only place where you can find a “waterfront shop”.We have a variety of menus.

At the halfway point, you’ll find the “waterfront shop Ichigo Ichie”, which sells take-out gourmet treats like coffee, sweet sake and snacks.

This is a drive-through on the water, so to speak!

It was in January when I visited, so I gave up on the idea, but I heard that beer is popular during the summer.

This time, I bought some recommendations from the waterfront shop, namely, the deep-fried rice cake and the mentai chikuwa (200 yen each, tax included).

It’s a luxury to be able to eat on the ship!

Fried rice cake. I hear it’s the most popular on the menu.

Both the fried rice cakes with sweet and spicy sauce and the spicy chikuwa with the crunchy texture of mentaiko are very filling and delicious.

They also had a variety of other items on the menu, such as amazake(sweet sake) and ice cream.

I recommend using the waterfront shop.

When you get to the highlight, you’re like, “Here’s your chance for shooting!”

Each company has a different river cruising course, but the highlights are almost identical.

Each time, you would say, “That’s Namikura on the left,” or “That’s the elementary school where a popular actor is from.

Each time, the boat is filled with laughter.

The late Meiji era building, the red brick Namikura, is the junction of the outer moat and the inner moat. Straight ahead and you’ll enter the outer moat.

A literary monument to the writer Dan Kazuo. My father’s parents live in Yanagawa.

An hour flies by!

We were laughing and taking pictures when we already reached the last stop, “Ohana”.

The last stop is the wharf leading to “Ohana”. Thank you for your hard work~

Ohana” is the residence of the Tachibana family, the former lord of the Yanagawa clan, and the whole site is designated as a national scenic beauty spot as “Tachibana clan garden”.

The house is open to the public and has a restaurant, so it’s perfect for dining and sightseeing.

Ohana is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Admission is 500 yen for adults, 300 yen for high school students and 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students (all tax included).

The river cruise is operated one way.

After disembarking, you can take a leisurely sightseeing tour and walk back home, or a free shuttle service is available.

“Yanagawa River Cruise” is recommended during the year

River cruising in the cherry blossom season

You can enjoy the four seasons of Yanagawa river cruising: cherry blossoms in spring, iris in early summer, a cool boat with a lighted tunnel in summer, a moon boat and autumn leaves in autumn, and a kotatsu boat in winter.

No matter when you visit, you’ll find your first view.

The most popular of these is the Yanagawa Hinamatsuri Festival Sagemon Meguri, an annual Hinamatsuri event held from February 11 to April 3.

The whole town is decorated with Hina matsuri festival ornaments called “Sagemon” (Hina’s hanging ornaments), which are unique to this area.

During this period, the “Hina Meguri Boat” will also run to see dolls decorated on the shore, which can be seen from the water.

SAGEMON” is a doll that is hung at Yanagawa. Cherry blossoms, plums, chicks, rabbits, etc. Each doll has its own meaning.

On March 18, 2018, the “Ohinasama Water Parade” was held, with beautifully dressed children parading on the water in a donko boat.

Sagemon is also on the top of the moat! Glittering water parade

On the last day of the festival, April 3, the two-month event comes to a close with the Nagashihina Festival, in which the participants write their dreams on Hina Tanzaku and pour them into the river.

It was built over 400 years ago.

This composition of the water, filled with the wisdom of our predecessors, still entertains us today as a “Yanagawa river cruise”.

The scenery and expressions that vary from season to season, the warm interaction with the boatman and the people on board, the rustling of the trees and the sound of birds…

Everything about the Yanagawa River cruising is the charm of the trip, and although it’s only an hour long, it’s sure to give you even more memories of your trip.

If you come to Yanagawa, please try it.

Eat Unagi(Steamed Eel) After River Cruise

Yanagawa is also famous for its eel restaurants.

If you’re hungry after a day of river rafting, you should definitely try it.

Here are some recommended restaurants.

Karatachi Foot Bath is Also Recommended After River Cruise

If you get a little tired, we recommend a footbath.

Natural Yanagawa hot spring water is used.

The spacious space where 70 people can soak in the hot spring at the same time is also attractive.
