Kanazawa, one of Japan’s leading tourist destinations. While a trip exploring the beautiful streets of Kenrokuen and Higashi Chaya District, and touching the history of Kanazawa Castle is wonderful, in Kanazawa at night, there’s a place where “local vibrancy” breathes, little known to tourists. That’s “Kakinokibatake” (Kakinokibatake), located right next to Kanazawa’s busiest entertainment districts, “Katamachi” and “Korinbo,” and the deep drinking district “Shintenchi” (Shintenchi) that follows from there.

This area, where unique independently-owned izakayas, stylish bistros, and Kanazawa’s famous oden restaurants are densely packed, allows you to experience Kanazawa’s lively “true face,” which is different from its refined “front” façade. In this article, for international visitors, we thoroughly explain the charm of “bar hopping where locals gather” to fully enjoy Kanazawa’s nightlife, and introduce 5 recommended affordable and delicious restaurants. A must-read for anyone who wants to experience Kanazawa’s real night!

Kakinokibatake is a historic area that has supported Kanazawa’s food culture for a long time, located just one backstreet from Katamachi and Korinbo. The narrow alleys, retaining the charm of the Showa era, are filled with a mix of old-fashioned eateries and new concept shops. Especially, the adjacent “Shintenchi” is an alleyway with small shops densely packed in narrow passages, creating a deep atmosphere where locals regularly visit. Since there are fewer tourists, you can truly feel the authentic nightlife of Kanazawa.

Tips for Enjoying Bar Hopping

Visit in a small group: Many shops are small, so visiting with 2-3 people is recommended. Large groups may not be able to enter.

Keep stays short at each place: Especially at popular standing bars, it’s polite to drink one glass and move on quickly for other customers. Turnover is key.

Follow your intuition for shops: Stepping into a shop that catches your eye without prior research is the true charm of alleyways.

Interact with shop owners and neighbors: If you get the chance, enjoy conversations with friendly locals. You might discover new things or gain information.

I would like to introduce, in order, the ramen shops in Osaka that a ramen enthusiast living in Osaka has actually eaten at and found delicious.

Originally, in Osaka, known as the city where people “eat till they drop” in Japan, there are many ramen shops, and it is said that there are currently about 1000 shops.

With so many, it can be hard to decide where to go, right?

Please use this as a reference if you like.

10. Ramen Kasumi Nakazakicho Store

“Ramen Kasumi” has been highly praised for a while.

The ramen, made with plenty of chunky back fat, is irresistible for those who love back fat.

The photo is of the special niboshi (dried sardines) ramen.

The flavor is very good, the noodles are thick and crinkly, and they mix well with the soup, making it very delicious.

Personally, I feel it’s somewhat reminiscent of Niigata-style ramen.

The large amount of back fat is something you’d crave in the cold winter months. It’s one of the shops I find myself going back to regularly.

A hidden gem located in a back alley near Imafuku Tsurumi station in Osaka City, “Tori(Chicken) Paitan Soba Wataru” is known for its outstandingly delicious chicken paitan soba.

The chashu and boiled eggs are very tender and well-seasoned, perfectly complementing the soup.

It’s a modern, typical chicken paitan soba.

Interestingly, all the staff members are women, including the kitchen, where you can sense a craftsman-like atmosphere from the female chef, offering a strangely reassuring feeling.

It’s a place where women can feel comfortable entering.

The photo is of chicken paitan soba, but they also sell a lobster miso flavored ramen, which is top on the list of dishes I feel I must try soon.

But ramen is also an indispensable gourmet! In this article, we introduce the recommended ramen shop by carefully selecting 13 shops, from salty taste to pork bone.

1. Hikosaku Ramen (Kamikyo Ward), a variety of relaxed noodles restaurants in Kyoto

The recommended ramen restaurant in Kyoto is Ramen Hikosaku.
This is a ramen shop that enjoys various types of ramen, including bird soup, pork soup, and fish and shellfish soup. The rich soup is said to be delicious.

In particular, I pay attention to the tuna cut soup and soy sauce-ramen ¥750 (including tax).
Characteristically, the shavings of tuna are applied come with noodles!
The delicious balance of the flavor of the sauce soup and the small noodles, and the sweet aroma of the sauce from the grilled noodles, is perfect.
It’s a nice delicious taste, and it’s easy to eat.

Want to eat even when you walk! Gentle soy sauce ramen in Kyoto

This shop is located at Imadegawa Station on the Karasuma Line of the subway line. It is about 15 minutes’ walk from the exit of Station No. 6.
Wednesday is a regular holiday, so it is necessary to check when you visit!

The flashy atmosphere of the ramen shop is nice, so that you can easily enter the shop.
In addition, since there are both counters and table seats, it can be used extensively from one person to the group.

The ramen of Takamatsu is made by adding a boiled and dried flavor to the chicken soup. It is soaked firmly in the straight noodles. It’s delicious because the depth of the sauce from the boiled and dried fish is blocked and smell passe through the nose. Because the ingredients are too thick, you can eat them without getting tired until the end.

A distinctive feature of a restaurant is that it can use aonori seaweed　to change taste! Well suited to seafood soups.

This restaurant offers ramen flavored with Kyoto-brand ingredients, such as Kyotanba Kogen Pig, Kujo Green onions.

What we recommend is ordinary “ramen” ¥660 (including tax). You can customize the amount of onion and menma in addition to the hardness of the noodles and the depth of the soup.

If you have ramen, please tie the chicken pork bones soup firmly into the ultra-fine noodles, and bring the onion and charshoe(roasted pork fillet) together.
There’s no mistake that you can be satisfied with the kind-tasting soup that fits your mouth and the ultra-fine noodles that combine with the green onion and charshoe, which make you feel like “Kyoramen!” even though it’s thick.

Around five minutes’ walk from JR Kyoto Station to arrive at the restaurant! Old-fashioned shops appear.

What you can eat at the restaurant is the simple and delicious ramen that costs ¥700 (including tax)! It looks orthodox and contains medium-sized noodle charshoe and onions in a transparent tonkotsu soy sauce soup.

However, if you eat it, the soy sauce is matched with tonkotsu soup, and the noodles that are carefully selected are blended with a mixture of carefully selected wheat, so that the taste of the soy sauce matches with the ingredients of the noodles. The deep-boiled charshoe and the only sweet kujonegi are also extraordinarily compatible with the soup.

Let’s order ramen as soon as possible.

The author’s recommendation is Sjiramen ¥830 (incl. tax). Sugi meat(Fillet) is used in the charshoe.
And it’s worth noting that soup! Chicken and pork bones are the basis for the elaborate soup that boils for more than 20 hours. Deep but not as persistent as regular pork bone soupy, and it is impressive for its delicate sweetness and milkyness. It is also compatible with the unique taste of meat.

I recommend lemon ramen ¥880 (tax excluded). It’s a strange noodle that was taken up in the media.
This is a ramen filled with roasted lemons on the chicken-white hot water soup, which is so rich and proud of the restaurant.

Thick soup spreading over the tongue, combined with refreshing lemon juice, has a deep and refreshing taste. One of the recommended ramen for women with a body-friendly taste.

I introduce two types of ramen.

First of all, shell salt ramen ¥680 (tax excluded)!
Here is a salty soup noodle made from clams, oysters, and scallops. At the first mouth, taste the squirrel carefully with the spoon. It is sure to impress you with a soup that emphasizes the taste of shellfish with a light salty taste

“Tantanmen” featuring sesame flavor and creamy flavor

Another Ramen, which I want to pay attention, “tantanmen” ¥810 (tax excluded)!
The creamy flavor is characterized by the use of the ingredients, and the depth of the flavor is even more prominent thanks to the special meat miso served together. You can’t get tired of it until the fiinish it because the sesame has come down as an accent.

Kyoto has “ramen koji” where many ramen shops of all over Japan are in.

However, eating ramen at “ramen koji” doesn’t mean you eat Kyoto Ramen.

https://jatrabridge.com/2020/03/18/4311/

Ichijoji in north part of Kyoto city is famous as Kyoto Ramen district in Kansai area.

Since Ichijoji is a bit far from center of Kyoto, fewer tourist visit and eat and mainly, only local people know.

Although you can eat awesome ramen at Kyoto Koji in Kyoto Station, it’s worth to eat ramen in Ichijoji.

Let me introduce ramen restaurants in Ichijoji

Note that Kyoto Ramen is basically pork bone soup, so Ichijoji ramen might not suit for those who care about it.

Menya Gokkei

Gokkei must be the best known ramen shop.

The reason why I choose “best known” is that it depends on your preference of the taste.

In Kyoto there is a rumor that the soup of “Gokkei’s ramen” is so thick that a chinese soup spoon stands if you stick a chinese soup spoon into the soup.

In fact, the rumor is true.

A chinese soup spoon stands like the photo above.

To explain the soup in one word, “muddy” is suitable.

Even in week days, the soup usually runs out until 20:00 because local fans and Japanese tourists are coming.

Also many people are wait in rows, so if are hesitate to wait for long time, please try other ramen shops.

Sometimes you need to wait up to about 15 minutes to enter the shop.

For more infomation, please check it out here.

Business Hours:11:30～22:00
Closed on Monday.
Close as soon as the soup runs out.

Access:8 minutes from Ichijoji Station on foot.

Takayasu

Takayasu is also popular ramen shop in Ichijoji where always long lines in front of the shop.

Takayasu’s soup is made from chicken and pork bone soup.

The soup is thinner compared with typical thick Kyoto ramen soup, so the taste is not so heavy.

The best menu is ramen and karaage(fried chicken), costs 1120 yen.

It’s because the karaage is huge.

The soup is not so heavy, so people tend to eat huge karaage instead.

The volume of ramen and karaage make you surely satisfied although you might feel guilt after you eat.

One of the features of Takayasu is the amazingly clean interior.

Takayasu’s website says that they dare to adopt the interior different from the image of the ramen shop.

Other ramen shops are being run for long time, so their interior look relatively older.

However, interior of Takayasu was renovated reccently, so it’s easy to find Takayasu.

At Ichijoji Boogie you can eat seafood soup ramen.

Although it is general that the soup is pork born based in Kyoto, seafood soup is unusual and delicious.

Its taste is simple original Japanese style ramen and slightly smells soy sauce.

The different kind of flavor must be one of your choice.

The other unusual point of Ichijoji Boogie is that you can eat Tsukemen.

Tsukemen is so called dipping noodles.

As it is shown on the photo, soup and noodle are separated.

When you eat it, dip the noodle on soup.

The taste of soup is thick and sweet.

Topped with pig meat, sprouts and cabbage, the topping is simple and orthodox.

Yumewo-katare’s feature is plateful style topping.

When you order ramen, you will be asked the if you need more garlic, and more vegetables.

It is a shop where you can taste orthodox Kyoto ramen at the central area of Ichijoji Ramen district.

The soup is thick chicken white soup that spreads gentle sweetness in your mouth once you eat it.

This soup is made by simmering chicken and vegetables, and you can enjoy the typical flavor of Ichijoji Temple, which is filled with the flavor of the ingredients.

Also Tentenyu is located right next to Yumewo-katare, so if you are not full after eating Tentenyu, why don’t you try Yumewo-katare?

You can enjoy the muddy soup that doesn’t sink chinese soup spoon, as it is called “a pure thick soup shop” and satisfies the thick soup lovers.

Although it’s thick soup made of chicken and pork born, unlike its appearance, it has elegant aftertaste without odor or greasy.

The thickly cut roasted pork fillet is appetizing.

‘hearty dipping noodles,’ described as the ‘must-try’ for first-timers.

Shortly after ordering, what arrived were two black bowls creating a sense of heaviness for the rich dipping noodles.

The thick dipping sauce, with a strong and robust blend of pork bone and seafood infused with a powerful fish broth, exuded a substantial presence.

Originating from a time when there was no tsukemen culture in Kansai, they have been serving this rich pork bone and seafood dipping broth even before it was called the ‘Mataoma style,’ exhibiting a robustness from its core.

Inside, there were several thick slices of chashu and a flavored egg that came as standard.

The noodles were thick and chewy, providing a high elasticity. Originally, they used noodles from Tetsuoku-san, but now they have their own homemade noodles after extensive research.

Although I could have upgraded to the free extra-large serving of 360g from the regular 270g, I opted for the regular size as I planned to have more meals in a row.

Coating the homemade high-elastic thick noodles with the original rich pork bone and seafood dipping broth…

Well, it was delicious! The richness of the dipping sauce and the elasticity of the chewy noodles complemented each other perfectly!

The 270g portion disappeared in no time.

Observing others, almost everyone seemed to be ordering the mixed noodles, and many were enjoying an unbelievably large portion of mixed noodles.

Although I couldn’t quite handle such an enormous serving, I will definitely try the mixed noodles if I have the chance again.”

Speaking of miso, we come up with miso soup for Japanese food.

So, miso tasted ramen can be said Japanese style ramen.
