During this season when the warm weather continues and outdoor dates become fun, a recommended spot for those who want to “spend time leisurely together under the spring sunshine” is the wisteria flower viewing spot, which typically reaches its peak from late April to early May.

In Tokyo, there are many parks and shrines where you can admire the delicate and beautiful wisteria trellises.

The sight of wisteria trellises releasing a sweet fragrance while drooping their light purple and white flower clusters is truly fantastical!

We introduce seven “wisteria viewing spots” where you can enjoy the spring scenery.

[Hibiya] Even during a shopping date! Enjoy wisteria flowers in the urban oasis of Hibiya Park

Adjacent to office districts and commercial facilities, “Hibiya Park” located in the heart of Tokyo, was established in the 36th year of the Meiji era as “Japan’s first modern Western-style park.”

The park, rich in greenery and open space, features squares, ponds, and flower beds, acting as an urban oasis.

Inside the park, you can enjoy seasonal flowers, among which wisteria flowers have three viewing spots within the park itself.

First, head to the area around Kumogata Pond in the center of the park.

Immerse yourself in the picturesque landscape formed by the waterfront and wisteria trellis, enjoying a luxurious moment with your partner!

Moving further to the east side near the first flower bed and the tennis court, you’ll encounter “a new charm of wisteria” that shows different expressions depending on the scenery (※Entry to the tennis court is prohibited for non-users).

Additionally, during this period, besides wisteria, tulips and azaleas are also at their peak!

Surrounded by beautiful flowers coloring the park vividly, let’s fully refresh ourselves.

How about taking a moment to relax during a shopping date in Yurakucho or Ginza?

[Kameido] The happiness of feeling elegant beauty at a wisteria spot known as “the best in Tokyo” / Kameido Tenjin Shrine

Kameido Tenjin Shrine, cherished as “the best wisteria spot in Tokyo,” has a history of wisteria dating back to the Edo period.

Kameido was a marshland, so the first head priest planted wisteria, which likes water, at the shrine, marking the beginning.

Since then, the wisteria at Kameido Tenjin Shrine has been cherished as a famous spot in Edo, with records of visits by the fifth shogun, Tsunayoshi, and the eighth shogun, Yoshimune.

Underneath the wisteria trellis lies the “Shinji Pond,” and the wisteria reflected on the water surface offers another level of beauty.

The collaboration between the wisteria and “Tokyo Skytree(R)” is also one of the attractions.

The beauty of wisteria under the blue sky during the day and the serene atmosphere at night, when the wisteria flowers are illuminated, are different.

The illuminated wisteria offers breathtaking beauty (illumination schedule to be determined).

The Wisteria Festival is held in mid-April every year.

Hie Shrine, known as a god of warding off evil, safe childbirth, matchmaking, thriving business, and prosperity of the clan, enshrines “Oyamakui-no-kami.”

In the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu established it as the “castle’s guardian shrine” and “the birth god of the Tokugawa throughout the generations.” Additionally, it was revered by the people of Edo as “the total clan god of Edo” and “the birth god of Edo.”

It has recently gained popularity as a power spot.

The wisteria trellis is located to the right as you face the main shrine.

The vivid contrast between the purple of the wisteria and the vermillion of the shrine pavilion is beautiful, making it a recommended “photo spot.”

Surrounded by the scent of wisteria flowers, when you look behind, you will see high-rise buildings!

The wisteria viewed amidst the urban atmosphere offers a uniquely different charm.

While searching for an attractive photo spot, please leave the best shot of the wisteria and the two of you.

In 1629, Tokugawa Yorifusa, the founder of the Mito Tokugawa family, constructed “Koishikawa Korakuen” as the garden of the Edo residence, which was completed during the era of the second clan lord, Mitsukuni.

It is the oldest existing daimyo (feudal lord) garden in Tokyo, designated as a Special Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the country.

The Japanese garden, centered around a large pond, is characterized by being divided into four areas: “views of the sea,” “views of the river,” “views of the mountains,” and “views of the countryside.”

Entering the “views of the countryside,” you’ll be greeted by beautiful wisteria trellises! The wisteria amidst the tranquil scenery has its own unique charm.

You can relax both mind and body in a landscape that makes you forget you’re in the city.

One of the early Edo period daimyo gardens remaining in Tokyo is “Former Shiba Rikyu Garden.”

A typical “strolling pond garden” centered around a pond, its garden layout and rock arrangements are exquisite.

Just a 1-minute walk from the north exit of Hamamatsucho Station and a 3-minute walk from Daimon Station, its ease of access is excellent.

The wisteria trellis is located near the entrance, with three wisteria trees adding splendor to the garden.

There are benches under the wisteria trellis, allowing you to slowly relax while admiring the beautiful flowers against the blue sky.

From “Waters Takeshiba,” an 8-minute walk from the garden, water buses depart for a mini-trip on a boat to Odaiba or Asakusa!

Planning a date based on “Former Shiba Rikyu Garden” sounds fun, doesn’t it?

[Chofu] Leisurely enjoy the grand beauty of the “Millennium Wisteria” together! / Kokuryo Shrine

Kokuryo Shrine, which enshrines “Kamimusubi no Kami” (the deity of creation and life and its regenerative powers), was formed in 1875 by merging Kokuryo Shrine (The Sixth Heaven Shrine) and Shinmei Shrine (Yakumo Shinmei Shrine & Sugimori Shinmei Shrine).

In the shrine precincts, there is a sacred wisteria tree regarded as a divine tree, believed to be about 400-500 years old.

Locally, this divine tree is affectionately called “Millennium Wisteria.”

The wisteria trellis is about 4m high and covers an area of about 400m², adorning the entire trellis with light purple flower clusters and enveloping the precincts with a sweet fragrance.

The contrast between the blue of the sky and the purple of the wisteria is incredibly beautiful, making it hard not to gaze in admiration.

The relatively small precincts are perfect for leisurely enjoying the wisteria together.

During the wisteria blooming season, there are also offerings of “Millennium Wisteria” amulets and ema (votive picture tablets), so be sure to check them out.

Jindai Botanical Gardens is located in the famous tourist area of Chofu City, the “Jindaiji” area.

Originally a nursery for growing trees for Tokyo’s streets, it opened in 1961 as the only botanical garden in Tokyo.

The garden, retaining the ambiance of Musashino, allows visitors to enjoy various plants throughout the seasons, creating a “light purple curtain” of splendid wisteria flowers in spring.

What’s distinctive is the abundance of types, such as the garden variety of Noda Wisteria “Kokuryu” and the garden variety of Yamafuji “Shiro Capitan”, allowing visitors to enjoy as many as 13 varieties of wisteria flowers.

Wisteria flowers reach their peak from late April to early May.

The flowers hanging from the wisteria trellises are beautiful, right? Depending on the location, they may be lit up at night, making them popular tourist attractions.

We’ve compiled a list of recommended spots that are worth visiting.

The best time to see wisteria flowers is from late April to early May!

Hakuhouji Temple (Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture)

Hakuhouji Temple (Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture) is renowned for its wisteria, which features long branches known as “Kujaku Fuji.”

Places famous for their wisteria, like Hakuhouji Temple, offer nighttime illuminations.

It’s great to take pictures of the wisteria illuminated in the darkness of the night.

The location is generally accessible only by car.

It gets incredibly crowded during Golden Week.

It’s recommended to go early in the day.

I went in the morning, but on my way back, there was a tremendous traffic jam of cars.

Shirai Omachi Fuji Park (Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture)

Shirai Omachi Fuji Park, as the name “Fuji Park” suggests, offers the enjoyment of many wisteria flowers.

Shirai Omachi Fuji Park (Shirai Omachi Fuji Koen) is the leading wisteria park in the San’in region with a park area of 7,000 square meters, a total wisteria trellis length of 500 meters, and a width of 4 meters.

Surrounded by clear air and green mountains, the purple and white wisteria flowers are vibrant and beautiful, captivating people.

In addition to the central pond and the wisteria trellises surrounding the park, there are also waterwheels and waterwheel huts, allowing the enjoyment of traditional landscapes.

The park opens in conjunction with the wisteria blooming season, and a Wisteria Festival is held with sales of local products and sweets.

Note that in 2022, after measures against the coronavirus, Shirai Omachi Fuji Park reopened, but the Wisteria Festival with merchandise sales did not take place.

In 2023, snack stalls, such as La Ilac’s ice gelato, have returned.

It seems that the festival can be enjoyed from 2024 onwards.

Sumiyoshi Shrine (Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture)

Sumiyoshi Shrine was founded in the 8th year of Emperor Yuryaku (464 AD).

The wisteria planted in the mid-Meiji era has now become a large wisteria trellis, swaying in the sea breeze, entertaining visitors.

In the shrine precincts, various historical buildings can also be seen. The Noh stage on the south side of the main hall is a designated cultural property of Akashi City and was selected as one of the “Top 100 Historical Cultural Properties of Fisheries and Fishing Villages to be Preserved for the Future” (selected by the Fisheries Agency in 2006).

In 1627, under the orders of the first lord of Akashi Domain, Ogasawara Tadazane, it was created and will reach its 400th anniversary in 2027.

The view of the Harima Sea from the torii gate fascinates many people.

Nakayama Kannon Park (Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture)

Adjacent to Nakayama Temple, Nakayama Kannon Park features a large wisteria trellis where you can enjoy white and purple wisteria flowers.

There are two types of wisteria: purple and white.

As there are fewer people, you can slowly enjoy the wisteria flowers and their fragrance.

Benten Pond (Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture)

It’s not particularly large, but it’s personally one of my favorite places.

A promenade is maintained around Benten Pond, and many people use it as a walking path.

Having a wisteria trellis and a bench right in front of the pond is very pleasant.

It’s located just a short walk from Hankyu Ninomiya Station.

Strawberries, which are in season from winter to early spring, are rich in sugar content and also abundant in Vitamin C.

In the prefecture, you can enjoy various varieties of strawberries such as Shizuoka-born “Benihoppe”, “Akahime”, and “Kirapika”, each with different levels of sweetness, acidity, and aroma.

It’s recommended to go strawberry picking targeting the best season for your favorite variety.

Please check with the farm about the season and the best time to eat, as it depends on the variety and the state of the fruit.

The season of cherry blossoms comes to an end during middle of through late April in Japan.

In Shiga Prefecture, there is a cherry blossoms viewing spot where will be the best season during such a period.

It is the “MIHO MUSEUM”, located in mountains of Koka-City.

Cherry blossoms of MIHO MUSEUM is glamorous, and especially when you view them from inside of a tunnel, it is fantastic!

MIHO MUSEUM is For the Last Cherry Blossoms in Kansai

MIHO MUSEUM is the art museum located in mountains of Shigaraki-Town, Koka-City, Shiga-Prefecture.

It opened in 1997 for the purpose of storing and exhibiting the collection of Mihoko Koyama, who is the founder of the spiritual organization, Shinji Shumeikai.

Actually, this MIHO MUSEUM is known as the one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots of Shiga Prefecture in spring, and as you can see here, in every year, during the season of cherry blossom blooming, there are crowded with many cherry blossom viewing tourists.

In addition, as Shigaraki-Town where MIHO MUSEUM is located is surrounded by mountains, the spring arrives later than to other regions.

So, you can still fully enjoy cherry blossoms here even when the best season finished in the plain region.

The best season of cherry blossoms of MIHO MUSEUM is from middle through late April.

Please indulge yourself by all means with cherry blossoms that bloom at the very last in Kansai.

https://jatrabridge.com/2019/04/27/355/

The main building of MIHO MUSEUM is located in the place where is further beyond one mountain from the reception building that is attached to the car parking.

As a result, it is necessary that all the visitors have to walk along the road that leads from the reception building to the main building.

But, as there are planted many cherry blossom trees along the road, these make eyes of visitors enjoy.

The Fantastic View From A Tunnel

When you proceed the road that leads to the main building, you will see a tunnel that goes through the mountainside.

You will then walk through this long tunnel to the main building.

When you entered to the tunnel, please look back from inside of the tunnel to the direction where you came from.

You can view the fantastic landscape as you see here.

This landscape is one of the points to see of MIHO MUSEUM.

So, many tourists enjoy viewing from inside of the tunnel.

Cherry blossoms Are Beautiful Even When Started Falling

For those who visit during when cherry blossoms started falling, please look also at roots of cherry blossom trees.

All around there are growing mosses naturally, and uncountable petals of cherry blossoms are scattering on these.

Such a sight is also beautiful.

If you shoot photos together with stepping stones, stepping stones become a good accent.

If you are a camera-fan, please try shooting a photo from each angle of your thoughts.

Views From An Electric Vehicle of MIHO MUSEUM

At MIHO MUSEUM, there always operates an electric vehicle between the reception building and the main building.

It takes just about 10 minutes by walk to the main building, but if you say that it is a bit hard for me to walk….., let’s ride on an electric vehicle.

As the running route of the electric vehicle is the same route as of walking, you can view relaxed and slowly the line-up cherry blossom trees, while sitting at ease.

It may be a good plan differently as walking when going and using the electric vehicle when returning.

Of course, as it is a place where is surrounded with natural fields and mountains, you can also view flowers of seasons, including torch azaleas besides cherry blossoms.

The Main Building of MIHO MUSEUM

After passing through the tunnel, there appears a big suspension bridge that crosses over deep valleys.

After crossed over it, you reach to the main building finally.

Let’s visit to also the main building after enjoy cherry blossoms.

The designer of the main building is Ieoh Ming Pei, a Chinese-American architect.

He is an architect who designed the glass pyramid that situated in front of the Louvre Museum.

The ceiling that put together complexed and the frames of walls show the distinctive interior, and in addition to lined-up cherry blossom trees, the constructive design of the main building and the in-building exhibitions that are collected from all over the world are worth seeing.

How did you like it?

As it is the cherry blossoms of the art museum, it is very thankful that you can enjoy these together with the collections.

It is also a good point that you can enjoy once again cherry blossoms in full-bloom, which already finished blooming in the plain region, isn’t it?

Please enjoy the last cherry blossoms in Kansai at MIHO MUSEUM.

If you ride on a boat from Kameoka, where is about 16 km upstream from Togetsukyo Bridge, a famous sightseeing place, there expands gorge and dynamic landscape, which you cannot imagine from calm and elegant atmosphere of Arashiyama.

https://jatrabridge.com/2019/09/20/2541/

The River Boat Ride Conveys a History of About 400 Years

When you speaking of Kameoka, a region of Tanba, located in north west of the Capital of Kyoto, you know that it is known as a castle town among mountains, where Mitsuhide Akechi was a lord.

The boat boarding place of Hozugawa Kudari is located where about 8 minutes walk from JR Kameoka station that is the gateway of the town.

The photo on left is a boat boarding place is located on a riverbank of Hozugawa.

The history of Hozugawa Kudari is old.

Ryoui Suminokura, a wealthy merchant of Kyoto, opened it as an industry canal in Keicho 11 (1606), early Edo Period, for the purpose of sending products, including timbers, firewood and charcoals, of Tanba region to the Capital.

After replaced to a land transportation by appearance of railways and cars, it composes a history as a sightseeing boat that you can enjoy the beauty of gorge of four seasons.

The photo on left is Hozugawa River where they transported timbers by making rafts in the Taisho Period.

The boat of Hozugawa Kudari is a small boat of flat-bottomed with 16 passengers as maximum.

There, three boatmen as one group get in, and the boat goes down the flow where rapids and large rocks scatter.

It is one of the must-see points that the posture of operating skillfully the boat with a long bamboo pole.

Hiroshi Kawarabayashi is the one of those who resigned a company employee and entered to this world, having thought that “wish to do a work that has a history and only in the local region”.

Although he is a veteran boatman experienced for more than 20 years, still it is said that he is yet a middle level.

“You need to experience, of which not only operating the boat, but accumulating knowledge and experience including of shape of the river, change of seasons, for at least 10 years to become qualified.”

Repairing and preserving nature of the river and the riverbank is also an important work of a boatman.

It is said that recently they are studying together the guidance in including English and Chinese for the purpose of guiding tourists from overseas.

During a season of cherry blossoms and an autumn leaves season, there may be sailing some 100 boats a day, so physical strength is also required.

But, he told that “works of a boatman also is that to make everybody, who rode on the boat together, excited and enjoy the history of 400 years, the nature of full of must-see spots, and the sense of unity.”

During winter season starting from mid December until March 9th, the boat becomes an ozashiki (like a parlor with tatami mats) heated boat.

The snowscape is also distinctive beauty.

Now, Let’s Leave for Toward Arashiyama

hozugawakudari.jp

The regular boat is on sail from 9 in the morning, and fares are adult 4,100 Yen and child (ages 4 to 12) 2,700 Yen (tax inclusive).

Even in the morning, there are usually full of tourists waiting for a ride.

Riding on a boat from the under the Shin Hozu Ohashi Bridge, and let’s go on a sail!

Inside the boat, there are lined six rows of seats in a bench type, and one row is for three to four persons to be seated.

The writer was on the boat with other15 passengers.

On left and right side, there prepared sheets for water guard.

That means you will be wet pretty much, doesn’t it?…

A bit pounding.

The river width is still wide and the flow is calm.

The boatman on left is “a poling”, and the right is “a paddling”.

Each of three boatmen has its role, and the one on the boat head operates a long pole, or “a poling”.

He poles on river bottoms and rocks so that he can move the boat forward and control the direction.

The one who rows a wooden paddle is of a role of engine of the boat.

And, on the rear, there is “steering” that decides direction of the boat, and it is said that it is the most important to get in sync of these three boatmen.

The boatmen introduce humorously how to operate the boat, the history of Hozugawa Kudari, and where to see around, etc, and the inside of boat becomes very friendly atmosphere before you noticing.

There runs the Sagano Romantic Train along Hozugawa River, connecting Kameoka and Arashiyama, and there may run sometimes in parallel with a boat.

When you look up from the surface of water, there are many people waving hands toward to our boat.

Everybody on the boat also are so excited that they wave hands back not to be outdone.

Thrills of Rapid Current and Splashes during Hozugawa River Boat Ride

Although calm flow continued for a while since boarding, it finally goes into the rapid current area after about 20 minutes since the start.

Here is called as “Koayu no Taki (Sweetfish Falls)”, and it is the only place in Hozugawa River where is named with falls.

The height of the waterfall is 2 meters, and it is said that it was named so because a small sweetfish cannot swim up to the waterfall.

Among boatmen, it is said that it was also told that the pronunciation of “Scary falls” has been changed. (It is because the Japanese pronunciations of “Sweetfish Falls” as “Koayu Taki” and “Scary falls” as “Kowai Taki” are somehow resemble.)

If without skillful pole operation and sync of three boatmen, it cannot pass through narrow spaces among rocks.

Faces of the boatmen who were talking some jokes until a few minutes ago become serious, and you will be charmed by such differences and coolness.

During the river boat ride, it will pass under five bridges of JR Sanin Main Line, and one bridge of the Sagano Romantic Train.

As the railway of JR runs almost straight, so it means that the river flows repeatedly meandering twisted.

After you saw Atagoyama Mountain, known as the god of fire prevention, on your left, and it appears in your front at the next time you see, you become losing your sense of direction…

As the boatmen push the pole at the same place, there remain marks of the pole even on solid rocks.

It is a prove that boatmen have carried cargo and people since the past of Edo Period.

When Ryoui Suminokura opened Hozugawa River as a canal, around the middle of the course, where “Magoroku Iwa Rock” that is covered with moss exists, were considered as the difficult place to pass until the end.

That was the time when there was no large drilling machine, and it is said that because Magoroku, a rock master, could break this huge rock, it was named after him.

The tragedy is also told that in the rapid current although he could put the last hit into the rock, Magoroku lost his life, and he sacrificed his life for the canal.

Even after passing the rock, if you see well, you can find that some rocks among them are shaved artificially.

And, when you see appearance that mosses and woods grow there, you may remind back to the hardship of predecessors.

Sometimes, the boat passes so close as if it may rub rocks.

End of the Hozugawa River Course

We came to the last rapid current, called “Ose rapid”.

Here, although the width of river is wide, rock places that splash water continue long.

During the course, every time the boat goes in a rapid current, the boatmen shouted that “Be prepared with the sheet!”, so you just got a bit of water splashes.

But, it is of course possible that you deliberately select to become soaking wet.

After passing through Ose Rapid, and when the flow becomes calm, you will find a boat with paper lanterns beyond your sight.

Somehow good smell is drifting.

It is a shop boat, a specialty of Hozugawa River.

After the boat comes and stops beside the shop boat, you can buy and taste freshly cooked oden (fishcake and vegetable stew) and mitarashi dango (skewered rice dumplings in a sweet soy glaze) on the boat.

For those sitting far from the shop boat, the other passengers help each other, passing money and dishes back and forth.

During the two hours boat ride, there happened sense of unity by shouting and laughing each other repeatedly.

It is funny that there is atmosphere inside the boat that indescribable friendly.

Oden, including en egg, konnyaku (yam cake), and radish, is 500 Yen.

Mitarashi Dango is 300 Yen for three skewers per one dish. (Both are tax inclusive)

After Getting Off the Boat

Saying good-by to the shop boat, and you will see Togetsukyo Bridge far forward of the boatman.

When flowing down until here, the river becomes crowded with houseboats that going around Arashiyama and shuttle boats that send guests of the inn.

Waving to the boatmen who are leaving from the landing place, and looking to the down stream, you will find the town of Arashiyama just in your front where is crowded with tourists.

Even when you finish the boat trip, it is still before lunch, you can still enjoy strolling around here and there for half a day!

This boat trip is close to the great nature, and is a full of thrills more than you imagine.

There are full of superb views and strange views that make you wish to shoot photos unconsciously, and these are absolutely worth to shoot.

Getting into the same rhythm as the boatmen, everyone is very excited, and you can also make a trip memory that makes your heart somewhere warmful.
