At “Onoue Farm～Strawberry Farm “Ruby”～” (Kurihara, Asuka Village, Takachiho County, Nara Prefecture), you can enjoy night-time strawberry picking.

It’s a unique strawberry farm where you can experience picking in the evening, perfect for a date.

It’s also recommended for those who are busy during the day and find it hard to go strawberry picking.

The greenhouse is lit up at night, and you can enjoy strawberries in a fantastical atmosphere with background music.

The start time for the evening session varies by season, and you can choose a convenient time from the 30-minute intervals to make a reservation.

Especially around sunset, the illumination looks even more beautiful, so it’s recommended to check the sunset time of the day you visit before making a reservation.

At this farm, you can enjoy plenty of Nara’s original variety, “Asuka Ruby”.

Asuka Strawberry Picking Park

There are many strawberry picking facilities in Asuka Village, but this “Asuka Strawberry Picking Park” (Asuka Village, Takachiho County, Nara Prefecture) is characterized by having 17 farms within the park.

Which farm to use will be informed at the time of reservation.

Here you can enjoy a 30-minute all-you-can-eat experience of Nara’s brand strawberry “Asuka Ruby”.

“Asuka Ruby” is also known as a red jewel, with a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, and is juicy.

It’s a glossy, large strawberry.

The strawberries at “Asuka Strawberry Picking Park” are cultivated in an elevated system, so you can enjoy harvesting comfortably without bending. Additionally, you can also take strawberries home, sold by 100g, perfect for those who want to enjoy strawberries at home.

Fraoula Farm

Enjoy strawberries grown in specially-prepared soil rich in organic materials at “Fraoula Farm” (Nara City, Naracho). The farm practices reduced pesticide cultivation, making it safe for small children and a recommended spot for families.

The varieties of strawberries available depend on the season, but you can taste and compare up to four different types.

There is also a direct sales store on-site where you can buy strawberries by the pack, which is great for those looking for souvenirs. The store also has clean restrooms for a comfortable visit.

Moreover, the farm is about an 18-minute drive from “Nara Park”, making it a great addition to a Nara sightseeing plan. It is also accessible by train.

Papillon Farm

At “Papillon Farm” (Moriomotocho, Tenri City, Nara Prefecture) located in Tenri City, they employ a unique cultivation method known as electronic technique cultivation.

This method enhances photosynthesis using air, water, and carbon. The farm uses water rich in negative ions and embeds finely crushed charcoal in the soil, effectively incorporating each element to produce delicious electronic strawberries.

At Papillon Farm, you can enjoy the “Yumeno Ka” variety.

Enjoy all-you-can-eat of Nara’s brand strawberry “Kotoka” at “CAP35” (Kizeno, Sangou Town, Ikoma County, Nara Prefecture).

The beautiful “Kotoka” strawberries of “CAP35,” with their glossy, deep red appearance, are known for their balance of sweetness and acidity, delicious taste, and rich aroma.

Grown in soil cultivated with a dedication to organic fertilizers, these strawberries boast a rich and flavorful taste.

In addition to enjoying the strawberries you pick, you can also take them home by weight, and they are available for sale by the pack, allowing you to savor delicious strawberries at home.

Besides strawberries, CAP35 also produces various vegetables and fruits, such as mini tomatoes “Petit Puyo” (early June to early August), taro, and black beans, and sells them at their direct sales store.

What is Naramachi?

What does “Naramachi” mean, anyway?

According to the Nara City website, Naramachi is designated as below.

Naramachi is currently divided into three areas:

“Nara Kitamachi” in the north, “Naramachi” in the south, and the area around Kyobate station, which is bordered by Route 369.

The area surrounding Kyobate station is the “Naramachi” area.

The area I’ll introduce is the central area of Naramachi.

This is the area after passing through the busy “Mochiidono Center Street” and crossing the main street.

The area south of this area becomes quieter and less touristy as you go further south.

Experience a Traditional Townhouse in Nara!

A must-see feature of Naramachi is the row of townhouses(machiya).

Some of the oldest houses were built in the Edo period and have “registered tangible cultural property” plates here and there.

Let’s experience such machiya and Japanese traditional games in Naramachi!

Enjoying a Machiya at Naramachi Nigiwai-no-ie

The Naramachi Nigiwai no Ie is a townhouse built over 100 years ago and is open for tours.

This house is also registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property.

Seasonal events and Japanese culture workshops are frequently held here, and more than 100,000 people visit the house every year!

It’s very popular.

There are various types of townhouses in Nara, depending on the layout of the house, and this one is called Omoteya-zukuri.

This not only adds to the atmosphere of the house, but also serves the purpose of privacy and crime prevention by preventing people to see the inside from the outside.

From inside the lattice, you can see the outside clearly, and with good ventilation and lighting, it also ensures a comfortable living environment.

Stepping inside, you’ll find a spectacular view of the 5 Japanese-style rooms that stretch all the way to the courtyard.

Further in, there’s a tatami room and a storehouse that’s believed to have been built in the Edo period.

Kamadao

Just looking around the house and seeing the kamado, which is used to cook rice, is a rare and exciting experience.

This kamado is still used for events.

They hold about 150 events a year, so you should check their website before you go to see what’s going on.

I had an image that a tour of a townhouse is only for people who are interested in architecture, but at Naramachi Nigiwai no Ie, you don’t need to know anything about the building to enjoy it because the details of the building are so interesting.

Even though I don’t have any architectural knowledge, I enjoyed just looking at the attention to detail that was sprinkled throughout the house.

The townhouse itself is a relaxing space, so it seems like a great place to spend time without thinking about anything else.

Adults Are Going Crazy! Naramachi Mechanical Toy Museum

Naramachi Mechanical Toy Museum, a 3-minute walk from Naramachi Nigiwai no Ie, suddenly appears in a quiet residential area.

Visitors can play freely with restored toys from the Edo period.

There are tables lined up in a Japanese-style room, with toys lined up on top.

There are 200 toys in all

And 20 to 30 toys are exhibited while being replaced little by little once every two months.

All of the toys are made of natural materials such as bamboo, wood and Japanese paper.

Even though the toys were restored from the Edo period, they are said to be flexible, strong and long-lasting.

I’ve tried a few oddly shaped kendama, and I’ve tried many times…

And I seriously fought with it…

To be honest, I didn’t expect adults to get so involved in the game.

Naramachi Mechanical Toy Museum is not to be underestimated!

There are staff members in the museum, so if you don’t know how to play with them, feel free to ask them to teach you.

The staff also showed me some shadow puppet toys, which made me feel like I was playing with staff.

When I looked at the shadows, I felt like a cat…?

It was someone dressed like this who was shadowing the cat!

You can enjoy this facility with children in the upper grades of elementary school, adults, and even tourists from abroad.

It’s a townhouse, so you can play here as if you were visiting your grandmother’s house.

I spent at least an hour playing here.

I want to go back to play every time they change the toys. (Seriously.)

Experiencing Traditional Crafts at Tanaka, Nara Fude(Brush)

Did you know that brushes used in calligraphy were originally from Nara, Japan?

In the 9th century, brush making was introduced from China to Nara, and from there brush making spread throughout the country.

In Naramachi, there is a place where you can experience making Nara’s traditional brushes.

That is “Nara Fude Tanaka“.

There are two courses of hands-on experience, and this time I tried the shorter course.

1,600 yen (tax included)

Before the experience, you will be briefed on how the brushes are made and the parts they use.

It is surprising that there are so many different types of brush bristles alone.

In this hands-on course, the brush shaft and tip of the brush are already assembled, and then the tip of the brush is shaped.

First, the bristles are coated with a thick glue called Funori, and then…

Once it’s thoroughly contained, remove the glue by hand.

The next step is to shape the hair with a comb, but be careful not to comb too hard or the hair will fall out.

If you just comb it out, the hairs will spread out, so you wrap the thread around the tip of the comb to further reshape the hair.

You need to repeat this process several times to get the hair to come together nicely, but it takes some effort to get the hang of it…

When it is finally neatly put together, the brush is capped and completed.

The cap is to prevent the brush from falling apart when you take it home, so take it off when you get home and let the brush dry.

Whether you are a calligrapher or not, why don’t you try your hand at this traditional Nara craft?

Drinking Craft Beer at Naramachi Brewery

Nara is known for its sake production, but there is also a craft beer brewery in Naramachi.

That is the Naramachi Brewery in Naramachi.

It was the first beer brewery to open in Nara City.

The owner, who loves beer, had the opportunity to open his shop in Naramachi.

You can see beer barrels inside the simple, stylish, wood-based shop.

One of the most popular beers here is the robustly flavored craft beer “Naramachi Ale”.

They also have a fruit beer made with seasonal fruits that is easy to drink, even for those who don’t like beer.

I don’t normally drink beer (I’m not much of a beer drinker), but I decided to try the Naramachi Ale and a winter-only beer called Yuzu Honey.

If you look at the two beers side by side, you’ll notice a huge difference in color.

The darker one is “Naramachi Ale”.

To be honest, I thought I wouldn’t be able to drink the Naramachi Ale, but it was totally acceptable.

I’m rather addicted to it…!

I no longer have a weakness for beer.

The most popular item here is the “Nara Shika-san Muffin“(400 yen).

It’s a muffin with a little bit of deer cookie on top.

Recently, a seated deer version of the muffin has become available as a precaution against the risk of the deer cookie breaking on the way home.

I bought the most popular sweet and soy bean and kinako-flavored muffins and enjoy them on the terrace at the entrance of the store.

This restaurant is basically a take-out shop, but you can eat the muffins and cake inside.

They also sell coffee, so you can relax even more if you have it with your cake.

Aside from muffins, they also offer other specialties such as “Nara’s Shika-san Sable” and…

There are a lot of Nara-style sweets such as the “Big Buddha Cookies”.

Of course, there are many other desserts other than the deer and Buddha motifs.

The cute icing cookies are designed to tickle your girl’s heart.

You can also buy deer goods and sundries, so if you are a deer lover, this is the place for you!

Not only tourists but also locals often buy “Nara’s Shika-san Muffins”, so if you want to buy them, we recommend you go early!

Relaxing Lunch & Cafe Time at Yotsuba Cafe

There are many small, secluded cafes in the Naramachi area.

It’s a great area for café lovers because you can find a great atmosphere just walking around.

One of the most popular is Yotsuba Cafe.

The interior of the cafe is filled with a retro feel that makes you feel like you’re at home.

The store is filled with dolls and books, and it looks like it would be fun to come with children.

The store also has a sundries corner with cute items that match the atmosphere of the store.

I decided to order the cheese chicken curry from the lunch menu.

The curry is not too spicy, but it has an addictive tomato flavor.

The black sweetened soybean s in the shape of a deer’s dropping is naturally sweet and delicious. (It has nothing to do with the real dropping…!)

The pudding is also very smooth and easy to eat.

The popular caramel mandarin parfait is a nice touch, with light ice cream and a savory caramel sauce that is not too sweet.

Nara-sight is a super-instagrammable theme park located in Mi Nara, Nara Prefecture.

The Goldfish Museum is a must-see attraction, and other extraordinary spaces are available for both children and adults to enjoy.

In fact, all of these photos can be taken in one facility.

That is the “Nara-sight“, an interactive theme park located in Nara City.

It’s a mysterious facility with an extremely photogenic space and a room where you can become a ninja.

What is the Nara-sight?

The Nara-sight, I will introduce here, is located on the fourth floor of the commercial complex Mi-Nara in Nara City.

You can get by a free shuttle bus from JR Nara Station, Kintetsu Nara Station or Kintetsu Shin-Omiya Station.

The Nara-sight is divided into four main areas

Except for the Ennichi(Fair) Area, each area requires an admission fee, but you can enjoy just any area you want, or you can enjoy the whole thing in one day.

When you go to the fourth floor of Mi Nala, the first thing you’ll find is a nostalgic Ennichi area.

This is an area with simple games for children to play.

You can’t help aim at them seriously.

The Kingyo(Goldfish) Museum is one of the most popular areas in Nara-sight.

There are seven rooms in total, each of which is designed according to a different concept.

The first one is Room1, where you can see the evolution of goldfish in an aquarium.

I heard that goldfish evolved from crucian carp, and what used to look like a “fish” in the beginning was…

It’s getting more and more like a goldfish.

It’s just like an ornamental goldfish.

The beauty of the goldfish was so great that I was enthralled.

On the other side of the aquarium, there was a projection mapping on the wall.

The picture on the wall showed a typical Nara landscape.

When you touch the wall, it makes a sound and glows as if it touched the surface of the water.

With the beautiful wall paintings and playful projection mapping, you’ll be able to play for a while.

In Room 2, 21 types of goldfish are displayed in an aquarium zone.

A wide variety of goldfish, from familiar to rare varieties, are swimming.

Just staring at them will soothe you and make you forget the passage of time.

Up to this point, you may feel like you’re in a museum, but the rooms after that are just as photogenic!

Room 3 is the most popular room for the so-called “Instagrammable”.

The walls are decorated with pink flowers and a goldfish tank.

No matter where you cut it, it’s just so cute!

The theme of the next room4 is “Japonism”.

[Ninja Town] Play as a Ninja and Experience Ninja Arts!

At Ninja Town, you can experience ninja arts as a ninja.

First, change into a ninja outfit.

If you take a picture with the standard ninja weapon, the kunai, you’ll feel like a complete ninja.

You’ll be a perfect ninja within 5 minutes of admission!

This is where the ninja training begins.

The first thing to do was to try blowing arrows.

After learning from a senior ninja, I decided to try blowgun shooting.

The blowgun hit a mark immediately.

“It was a piece of cake,”

I thought to myself, and moved on to the next shuriken field.

I threw the shriken many times, but it didn’t pierce the target at all.

The next experience of kenjutsu was to hit the red light with the sword.

I had a hard time with this one too, due to my lack of athletic nerves.

When I finished swordsmanship training, I went through the mechanism, looking for a hidden door…

I wanted to cry because I couldn’t open any doors.

After arriving at the hall, the next challenge is to solve the riddle.

At the end of the game, the senior ninja and I will fight!

When all the training is complete, you will receive a “ninja certificate” based on your score.

Also adult can enjoy this experience, so there is space for younger children to play.

Smaller children have the advantage of being able to pass through without ringing the bell!

I was skeptical that it was going to be much fun to experience ninja arts, but when I came to the Ninja Town, I realized that it was really fun.

“Former Nara juvenile prison” in Nara city, Nara prefecture, built in Meiji period, and it is designated as the National important cultural treasure, and is very popular among many fans as called as “an excessively beautiful prison” as construction heritage.

And now, by preserving and utilizing this beautiful construction heritage, there is a plan to reborn it as a hotel, targeting to open in 2021.

Romanesque Style Prison Rebirth as a Hotel

“Former Nara juvenile prison” was built as Nara prison, and it is the only existing building made of red bricks among “five large prisons” built in Meiji Period.

The facility was constructed in Meiji the 41st (1908) for appealing modernization of prisons by Meiji government, and had been used as Nara juvenile prison from Showa 21st (1946).

Though it is said that it is a prison, the construction is quite elaborated, and Mr. Keijiro Yamashita, an engineering official of former Ministry of Justice was in charge for designing.

Massively made of bricks, the building has the arch style front gate with curving dome roofs.

And it is designed that five containment buildings, each two-storied are extended radiatively from the main building.

As more than 100 years had passed since its built, it was reluctantly closed in March 2017, due to the building deterioration.

But, there are many voices for wish to preserve, and the right for operation of the building has been granted to a company that develops nationwide hotel operation.

And then, decided that it will rebirth as “a prison hotel” first in Japan, with attachment of some museums in 2021.

It is expected that it will become “a new sightseeing spots in the old capital, Nara”.

How the prison will be turned as a Hotel

The plan shows that the hotel will be equipped with three different types of accommodation.

The containment buildings will become accommodation facility of about 150 rooms, by removing walls of single cells and ingeniously changing three single cells to one room.

Also, a hotel, from which a guest can view the historical construction, of about 80 rooms will be newly constructed in the ground.

Moreover, a museum about history and roles of Nara prison, a commercial area of selling art crafts and miscellaneous goods of Nara, restaurants, and a spa facility are planned to be attached.

The museum will open in October, 2019, and the complex facility including hotels are scheduled to open in 2021.

A part of demolition work has started in August 2018, and seismic reinforcing works has started in October accordingly.

In June 2018, the inside of building was opened specially to students of school excursion.

Taking this opportunity, many citizens came to the city tourism association with saying that “we want to observe”.

As a result, in early October 2018, observation of the inside was operated as a part of tours that visiting around constructions of Meiji period.

Yoshino cedar, products of Nara , are used for the interior, which makes you feel the warmth of wood.

Super Hotel Lohas is located nearby JR Nara station, so you need just 1 minute to get the hotel.

It should be famous among tourists from overseas because the hotel exist in Bangkok, Thai and Hanoi, Vietnam too.

With thorough cost reduction, Lohas offers low price, around 5000 yen with breakfast for one night per person.

A simple breakfast with bread, salad and egg dishes is served with buffet style in the dining area from 6.30 am to 9 am.

Although it’s not luxury hotel, the cost is cheap and the hotel is connected to the station directly.

Yoshidaya stands in front of Sarusawa Ike(pond) and it’s nearby Kofukuji temple, 2 minutes walk lead you there.

Also it’s easy to access from Kintetsu Nara station in 8 minutes and from JR Nara station in 15 minutes.

The interior is chic, and the rooms are filled with Japanese modern atmosphere.

After sunset, Kofukuji temple is lighten up, emitting fantastic atmosphere.

Amazingly, You can see that awesome view from bath.

Staying a great location overlooking the five-storied pagoda of Kofuku-ji Temple and Sarusawa Pond, why don’t you have a trip to the luxury of Nara?

Most of people would imagine deers or buddha even they are Japanese.

In fact, I also imagine so until February in 2019.

When I was on the way to return to Kyoto from Nara by Kintetsu Line, fire works and the mountain which was burning come into my sight.

That made me surprised because in Japan, fire works festivals are generally held in summer night and literary the mountain was burning.

Mt.Wakakusa is near Todai-ji Temple and Nara Station of Kintetsu line.

Basically, you can see from everywhere around Nara Station.

Good place is for example, Nara Park where it takes 20 minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara Station and 10 minutes by bus.

Since food stalls are in the park, you can enjoy both view and foods.

One is that to calm the soul of the Uguisuzuka Tomb on the summit of Mt.Wakakusa.

Japan used to have a habit to bury the king or person who had power on the summit in the region.

People had been burning Mt.Wakakusa in every year as a ceremony.

So it can be thought that burning Mt.Wakakusa used to be like a memorial ceremony of Hiroshima which is held every year to commemorate.

For Amulet

It was believed that cow-demon would come if Mt.Wakakusa wasn’t burned.

This legend was found in the ”Nanto annual event” written by a Murai Furumichi a doctor in 1740.

Since people near the Mt.Wakakusa were afraid of attacking by cow-demon, it they began to burn the mountain.

But, it’s not sure why burning the mountain prevents attack by cow-demon.

Meaning of Lunching Fire Works

Fire works was originally lunched for a signal to ignite mountain.

So, the number of fire works was not so a lot before.

But, now its meaning is currently including tourism festival and the number of fire work lunched is more than 600.

Note that since fire works are lunched first, you can’t take photo of mountain burning and fire works at the same time.

Now It’s Festival for Tourism

In 1900, Mt.Wakakusa Burn of the purpose began to change.

It is said that Mt.Wakakusa was burned in daytime, but now mountain is burned at night.

So, Mt.Wakakusa Burn turned  into festival for sightseeing purpose.

In a sense, it’s interesting that although  the event and what people do hasn’t been changed, the purpose is different.

Searching what the festival means is hard to make sense now, but is interesting.
