Popular No.1 Menu at Mentouan “Kinchaku Kitsune”

Kinchaku Kitsune 950 yen (tax included)

A large piece of fried tofu (aburaage) floats in a generous amount of broth!
It’s shaped like a drawstring bag, with udon noodles inside.

The owner, who studies delicious udon from all over Japan, came up with the idea to make something interesting.

It’s very popular because of its impressive appearance and delicious taste!

The fried tofu is stuffed with noodles and cooked in broth, so the noodles inside are well-flavored.

Please split open the drawstring bag, scoop out the udon, and don’t forget to take a commemorative photo.

The Broth is Rich with the Flavor of Fried Tofu

The shop’s original drawstring bag is about the size of a palm, with rounded noodles and neatly tied green onions, which looks adorable.

The broth has a good mix of fried tofu oil, enhancing its umami and sweetness!

The udon is soft, perfectly matching the gentle broth.

Takeout for Home Cooking and Customization is Also Recommended

For those who want to enjoy the famous “Kinchaku Kitsune” at home, and as a perfect souvenir, a take-home set is also available.

Named “Kogitsune Set.”

I bought it myself, and both the name and the packaging are very cute◎

The “Kogitsune” drawstring bag and broth set is 900 yen, the “Kogitsune” alone starts from 700 yen, and a value set of 3 is 2,000 yen.

I bought 2 “Kogitsune” and 1 bottle of broth, allowing for custom combinations.
※Only the broth is not sold separately.

The Evolution of the Owner Who Devised Delicious and Fun Udon Continues

Owner Mr. Tsuhoi cultivated Mentouan into a super popular store in Nara through experiences from his salaryman days, and his unique research and inventive ideas.

He shared his passion for udon with a gentle smile.

Besides delicious udon making, you can feel his dedication in his work clothes (samue) and hairstyle.

New Seasonal Menu “Shika Udon” to Enjoy

Popular among fried tofu lovers is “Shika Udon.”

This dashi udon topped with three pieces of 7cm square simmered fried tofu, features burnt-in designs related to Nara, like “Daibutsu-san,” “Ashura,” “Kasuga Lanterns,” and “Shika” (deer).

Part of the ongoing “Nara Tourism Series.”

It seems to add delicious and fun memories like “We’ve been here,” “The Bambi was cute～♪.”

Here are some recommended cafes and places to visit if you are planning to visit Naramachi.

Naramachi is an area of tasteful townhouses with a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for those who don’t like crowds. Here are some suggestions on how to enjoy a leisurely day of strolling.

Nara Prefecture is one of Japan’s most famous tourist destinations, and is known as the ancient capital of Japan.

Walking around the famous sights, there are many international tourists, it’s really crowded on weekends.

But there are other things to do in Nara that are not limited to visiting famous tourist spots.

That is walking in Naramachi (Nara Town).

Naramachi is good for those who…

I love old townhouses.
I’m interested in making fine craftsmanship.
I need to go to a cafe where I can relax.
I don’t like crowded places.

So, I would like to suggest a fun way to spend a day exploring Naramachi.

If you are tired of sightseeing in Nara, or if you just want to spend a relaxing holiday in a quiet place, I recommend you to visit these spots!

What is Naramachi?

What does “Naramachi” mean, anyway?

According to the Nara City website, Naramachi is designated as below.

Naramachi is currently divided into three areas:

“Nara Kitamachi” in the north, “Naramachi” in the south, and the area around Kyobate station, which is bordered by Route 369.

The area surrounding Kyobate station is the “Naramachi” area.

The area I’ll introduce is the central area of Naramachi.

This is the area after passing through the busy “Mochiidono Center Street” and crossing the main street.

The area south of this area becomes quieter and less touristy as you go further south.

Experience a Traditional Townhouse in Nara!

A must-see feature of Naramachi is the row of townhouses(machiya).

Some of the oldest houses were built in the Edo period and have “registered tangible cultural property” plates here and there.

Let’s experience such machiya and Japanese traditional games in Naramachi!

Enjoying a Machiya at Naramachi Nigiwai-no-ie

The Naramachi Nigiwai no Ie is a townhouse built over 100 years ago and is open for tours.

This house is also registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property.

Seasonal events and Japanese culture workshops are frequently held here, and more than 100,000 people visit the house every year!

It’s very popular.

There are various types of townhouses in Nara, depending on the layout of the house, and this one is called Omoteya-zukuri.

This not only adds to the atmosphere of the house, but also serves the purpose of privacy and crime prevention by preventing people to see the inside from the outside.

From inside the lattice, you can see the outside clearly, and with good ventilation and lighting, it also ensures a comfortable living environment.

Stepping inside, you’ll find a spectacular view of the 5 Japanese-style rooms that stretch all the way to the courtyard.

In the innermost tatami room, there’s a buddha room protruding from the tatami room

And you can see the opulence of the house from the size and decorations.

The ceiling of the room is filled with beautiful paintings, so please go inside the room and look up.

When you pass through the Japanese-style room, you will see a courtyard in front of you.

The courtyard is colored with seasonal plants and has an air of beauty that makes you want to just stare at it.

Further in, there’s a tatami room and a storehouse that’s believed to have been built in the Edo period.

Kamadao

Just looking around the house and seeing the kamado, which is used to cook rice, is a rare and exciting experience.

This kamado is still used for events.

They hold about 150 events a year, so you should check their website before you go to see what’s going on.

I had an image that a tour of a townhouse is only for people who are interested in architecture, but at Naramachi Nigiwai no Ie, you don’t need to know anything about the building to enjoy it because the details of the building are so interesting.

For example, The pull of the bran is designed as a Japanese ginger…

There are painting directly on the doors and…

Even though I don’t have any architectural knowledge, I enjoyed just looking at the attention to detail that was sprinkled throughout the house.

The townhouse itself is a relaxing space, so it seems like a great place to spend time without thinking about anything else.

If you come to Naramachi, drop in and enjoy your time there in your own way.

Adults Are Going Crazy! Naramachi Mechanical Toy Museum

Naramachi Mechanical Toy Museum, a 3-minute walk from Naramachi Nigiwai no Ie, suddenly appears in a quiet residential area.

Visitors can play freely with restored toys from the Edo period.

There are tables lined up in a Japanese-style room, with toys lined up on top.

There are 200 toys in all

And 20 to 30 toys are exhibited while being replaced little by little once every two months.

All of the toys are made of natural materials such as bamboo, wood and Japanese paper.

Even though the toys were restored from the Edo period, they are said to be flexible, strong and long-lasting.

I’ve tried a few oddly shaped kendama, and I’ve tried many times…

An old-fashioned board game, “I don’t want to lose!

And I seriously fought with it…

To be honest, I didn’t expect adults to get so involved in the game.

Naramachi Mechanical Toy Museum is not to be underestimated!

There are staff members in the museum, so if you don’t know how to play with them, feel free to ask them to teach you.

The staff also showed me some shadow puppet toys, which made me feel like I was playing with staff.

When I looked at the shadows, I felt like a cat…?

It was someone dressed like this who was shadowing the cat!

You can enjoy this facility with children in the upper grades of elementary school, adults, and even tourists from abroad.

It’s a townhouse, so you can play here as if you were visiting your grandmother’s house.

I spent at least an hour playing here.

I want to go back to play every time they change the toys. (Seriously.)

Get a Feel for Naramachi’s Distinctive Craftsmanship

In Naramachi, craftsmanship, such as the making of traditional handicrafts and craft beer brewing, are also popular.

It’s interesting to walk around the town and feel the passionate craftsmanship, so please include it in your sightseeing plan.

Experiencing Traditional Crafts at Tanaka, Nara Fude(Brush)

Did you know that brushes used in calligraphy were originally from Nara, Japan?

In the 9th century, brush making was introduced from China to Nara, and from there brush making spread throughout the country.

In Naramachi, there is a place where you can experience making Nara’s traditional brushes.

That is “Nara Fude Tanaka“.

There are two courses of hands-on experience, and this time I tried the shorter course.

1,600 yen (tax included)

Before the experience, you will be briefed on how the brushes are made and the parts they use.

It is surprising that there are so many different types of brush bristles alone.

In this hands-on course, the brush shaft and tip of the brush are already assembled, and then the tip of the brush is shaped.

First, the bristles are coated with a thick glue called Funori, and then…

Once it’s thoroughly contained, remove the glue by hand.

The next step is to shape the hair with a comb, but be careful not to comb too hard or the hair will fall out.

If you just comb it out, the hairs will spread out, so you wrap the thread around the tip of the comb to further reshape the hair.

You need to repeat this process several times to get the hair to come together nicely, but it takes some effort to get the hang of it…

The cap is to prevent the brush from falling apart when you take it home, so take it off when you get home and let the brush dry.

Whether you are a calligrapher or not, why don’t you try your hand at this traditional Nara craft?

And you get to take the brushes you made home with you, which is a great memory!

I recommend Yoshida Mosquito Net dishcloth as a souvenir

Drinking Craft Beer at Naramachi Brewery

Nara is known for its sake production, but there is also a craft beer brewery in Naramachi.

That is the Naramachi Brewery in Naramachi.

It was the first beer brewery to open in Nara City.

The owner, who loves beer, had the opportunity to open his shop in Naramachi.

You can see beer barrels inside the simple, stylish, wood-based shop.

One of the most popular beers here is the robustly flavored craft beer “Naramachi Ale”.

They also have a fruit beer made with seasonal fruits that is easy to drink, even for those who don’t like beer.

I don’t normally drink beer (I’m not much of a beer drinker), but I decided to try the Naramachi Ale and a winter-only beer called Yuzu Honey.

Yuzu Honey (left) and Naramachi Ale (right): 960 yen (tax included) and 480ml each

If you look at the two beers side by side, you’ll notice a huge difference in color.

The darker one is “Naramachi Ale”.

Gently sipping the beer…

It’s nothing like any beer I’ve ever had!

The “Naramachi Ale” had a robust flavor, while the “Yuzu Honey” was fruity and sour and easy to drink.

To be honest, I thought I wouldn’t be able to drink the Naramachi Ale, but it was totally acceptable.

I’m rather addicted to it…!

I no longer have a weakness for beer.

Kakinoha sushi 880 yen (tax included)

You can also have Nara’s famous Kakinoha Sushi to go with your beer.

Beer-stewed chicken wings 680 yen (tax included)

Warmed by the warmth of the tender meat and gentle flavor…!

They open at 11:30 a.m

So you can have a good craft beer in the middle of the day…

What could be more luxurious than this?

It’s a quiet area of Naramachi where you can relax.

There are many female customers, so it’s safe to go for a drink with just women.

Try the freshly brewed, flavorful craft beer in Naramachi.

Relax in a Townhouse and Enjoy Deer Sweets!

Nara is famous for its deer, isn’t it?

So, in the Naramachi area, there are many deer-themed sweets that you can try on the spot or take home as a souvenir.

You can eat them on the spot or buy them as a souvenir to take home.

Here are some of the sweets and a cafe where you can relax and enjoy them.

Happy Sweets “Archaic” for Deer Candy

Speaking of deer sweets, this is the place to be! You can’t miss “Archaic“.

A stylish French-style shop appears on the street lined with Japanese townhouses.

The shop has a unified, retro atmosphere.

The most popular item here is the “Nara Shika-san Muffin“(400 yen).

It’s a muffin with a little bit of deer cookie on top.

Recently, a seated deer version of the muffin has become available as a precaution against the risk of the deer cookie breaking on the way home.

I bought the most popular sweet and soy bean and kinako-flavored muffins and enjoy them on the terrace at the entrance of the store.

This restaurant is basically a take-out shop, but you can eat the muffins and cake inside.

They also sell coffee, so you can relax even more if you have it with your cake.

Aside from muffins, they also offer other specialties such as “Nara’s Shika-san Sable” and…

There are a lot of Nara-style sweets such as the “Big Buddha Cookies”.

Of course, there are many other desserts other than the deer and Buddha motifs.

The cute icing cookies are designed to tickle your girl’s heart.

You can also buy deer goods and sundries, so if you are a deer lover, this is the place for you!

Not only tourists but also locals often buy “Nara’s Shika-san Muffins”, so if you want to buy them, we recommend you go early!

Relaxing Lunch & Cafe Time at Yotsuba Cafe

There are many small, secluded cafes in the Naramachi area.

It’s a great area for café lovers because you can find a great atmosphere just walking around.

One of the most popular is Yotsuba Cafe.

The interior of the cafe is filled with a retro feel that makes you feel like you’re at home.

The store is filled with dolls and books, and it looks like it would be fun to come with children.

The store also has a sundries corner with cute items that match the atmosphere of the store.

Melting Cheese Chicken Curry Set 1,450 yen (tax included) *The photo shows the curry without the cheese for 1,400 yen (tax included)

I decided to order the cheese chicken curry from the lunch menu.

The curry is not too spicy, but it has an addictive tomato flavor.

You can’t stop gobbling up your spoonful of food.

For the set, I chose the “Shikano otoshimono(Deer’s Dropping)” pudding.

The black sweetened soybean s in the shape of a deer’s dropping is naturally sweet and delicious. (It has nothing to do with the real dropping…!)

The pudding is also very smooth and easy to eat.

Caramel Mikan Parfait 550 yen (tax included)

The popular caramel mandarin parfait is a nice touch, with light ice cream and a savory caramel sauce that is not too sweet.

It was very cold that day, but I was warmed up by a heater placed behind my seat.

When you get tired of walking around Naramachi, why don’t you take a break at Yotsuba Cafe?

If you want to relax and enjoy Nara, visit Naramachi

On weekends, the area around Nara Park is crowded with tourists, and it’s still a bit tiring.

There are famous shrines and temples and lots of deer in the park.

But that’s not the only attraction of Nara.

Naramachi, an area not often visited by tourists, is within walking distance from the station and has beautiful scenery and many shops.

This is where you can feel the good old culture of Nara and the commitment of the people who live in the town.

If you haven’t been to Naramachi yet, please visit there at least once, or if you have been there before, please come back again to discover something new.

Nara-sight is a super-instagrammable theme park located in Mi Nara, Nara Prefecture.

The Goldfish Museum is a must-see attraction, and other extraordinary spaces are available for both children and adults to enjoy.

First of all, take a look at these photos.

Wouldn’t you be fascinated by the beautiful extraordinary space?

There were a few strange photos mixed, but I didn’t upload them by mistake.

In fact, all of these photos can be taken in one facility.

That is the “Nara-sight“, an interactive theme park located in Nara City.

It’s a mysterious facility with an extremely photogenic space and a room where you can become a ninja.

What is the Nara-sight?

The Nara-sight, I will introduce here, is located on the fourth floor of the commercial complex Mi-Nara in Nara City.

You can get by a free shuttle bus from JR Nara Station, Kintetsu Nara Station or Kintetsu Shin-Omiya Station.

The Nara-sight is divided into four main areas

Ennichi(Fair) Area
Goldfish Museum
Ninja Town
Trick art

Except for the Ennichi(Fair) Area, each area requires an admission fee, but you can enjoy just any area you want, or you can enjoy the whole thing in one day.

I’ve taken a tour of all the areas in this article!

[Ennichi Area] Get Points for Nostalgic Games

When you go to the fourth floor of Mi Nala, the first thing you’ll find is a nostalgic Ennichi area.

This is an area with simple games for children to play.

Each game allows you to accumulate points and exchange them for prizes.

Speaking of Ennichi area, there’s shooting games…!

The targets are candy or toys for children

You can’t help aim at them seriously.

Apart from the six games, such as target practice where you can earn points, there are also shuriken target practice and tile cracking.

I heard that a woman can break two or three roof tiles, so I tried it right away.

Yes, it didn’t break at all…

Although tile-breaking is not a game where you can earn points, you can exchange the points you earn from other games for prizes.

[Goldfish Museum] Enjoy Extraordinary Space of Goldfish Art!

The Kingyo(Goldfish) Museum is one of the most popular areas in Nara-sight.

There are seven rooms in total, each of which is designed according to a different concept.

The first one is Room1, where you can see the evolution of goldfish in an aquarium.

I heard that goldfish evolved from crucian carp, and what used to look like a “fish” in the beginning was…

It’s getting more and more like a goldfish.

It’s just like an ornamental goldfish.

The beauty of the goldfish was so great that I was enthralled.

On the other side of the aquarium, there was a projection mapping on the wall.

The picture on the wall showed a typical Nara landscape.

When you touch the wall, it makes a sound and glows as if it touched the surface of the water.

With the beautiful wall paintings and playful projection mapping, you’ll be able to play for a while.

In Room 2, 21 types of goldfish are displayed in an aquarium zone.

A wide variety of goldfish, from familiar to rare varieties, are swimming.

Just staring at them will soothe you and make you forget the passage of time.

Up to this point, you may feel like you’re in a museum, but the rooms after that are just as photogenic!

Room 3 is the most popular room for the so-called “Instagrammable”.

The walls are decorated with pink flowers and a goldfish tank.

You can also take a picture from the front.

It seems to be popular among women who love something cute and people from overseas, and you can often see their photos on Instagram.

No matter where you cut it, it’s just so cute!

The theme of the next room4 is “Japonism”.

The mixture of Japanese and Western decorations are also very photogenic.

I heard that it’s a standard practice to take pictures of people sitting on the sofa.

There are a number of Nara touches here and there.

A deer on the wall.

In Room5, you can enjoy an extraordinary space made of mirrors.

In this kaleidoscope-themed room, you can take a selfie with a goldfish by placing a mirror behind the tank as well.

The goldfish in this room, called the “blistering eye,” is also very cute.

The “blistering eye”, where the skin of the eyes is stretched and swollen.

I’m sure I’ve already taken a lot of photos so far, but there’s a room that’s even more of a highlight.

This is Room 6.

Earth is the theme of this room, and the terrarium in the center of the room is said to represent the earth.

This sparkling room is said to be popular with both men and women.

No matter where you take your picture, you’ll get a great picture.

You can take a picture like this.

“If possible, I’d like to take a picture with no one else around…!”

If you feel that way, you can leave and re-enter at the right time. (Only on that day.)

Lastly, in Room 7, take a photo with the goldfish and the Big Buddha panel.

You can even be a goldfish yourself.

[Ninja Town] Play as a Ninja and Experience Ninja Arts!

At Ninja Town, you can experience ninja arts as a ninja.

First, change into a ninja outfit.

If you take a picture with the standard ninja weapon, the kunai, you’ll feel like a complete ninja.

You’ll be a perfect ninja within 5 minutes of admission!

This is where the ninja training begins.

The first thing to do was to try blowing arrows.

After learning from a senior ninja, I decided to try blowgun shooting.

The blowgun hit a mark immediately.

“It was a piece of cake,”

I thought to myself, and moved on to the next shuriken field.

I threw the shriken many times, but it didn’t pierce the target at all.

The next experience of kenjutsu was to hit the red light with the sword.

I had a hard time with this one too, due to my lack of athletic nerves.

When I finished swordsmanship training, I went through the mechanism, looking for a hidden door…

I wanted to cry because I couldn’t open any doors.

After arriving at the hall, the next challenge is to solve the riddle.

At the end of the game, the senior ninja and I will fight!

When all the training is complete, you will receive a “ninja certificate” based on your score.

Also adult can enjoy this experience, so there is space for younger children to play.

Smaller children have the advantage of being able to pass through without ringing the bell!

You can see ninja show at where I fought senior ninja.

This is an area where you can not only play, but also enjoy watching them.

I was skeptical that it was going to be much fun to experience ninja arts, but when I came to the Ninja Town, I realized that it was really fun.

Adults can have this much fun, so I think it’s even more fun if you bring the kids along too!

[Trick Art] Let’s have fun taking mysterious pictures of each other

Finally, play around with the trick art area and take some magical pictures.

The trick art featuring goldfish and ninja were painted directly on the wall.

There is a sample photo and a mark to show where to take the picture, so it’s easy to take the same pose from the designated area and complete the trick art.

It’s just like riding on the back of a goldfish

You would take pictures and say, “What is this!”

You and your friends will have a great time taking pictures of each other.

Enjoy Theme Park in Nara That Even Adults Can Have Fun

‘You’re not going to be crazy about goldfish and ninjas when you grow up…’

I have to admit that I thought so for a bit.

But I found myself engrossed in looking at the goldfish and seriously playing around trying to learn the art of ninjutsu.

Most of the tourist attractions in Nara are outdoors, but here at Nara-sight, all of the attractions are indoors, so it’s nice to enjoy them regardless of the weather.

It’s a great place to go for a family outing or to spend time with friends.

When we hear “a prison”, many of you may not feel good images.

“Former Nara juvenile prison” in Nara city, Nara prefecture, built in Meiji period, and it is designated as the National important cultural treasure, and is very popular among many fans as called as “an excessively beautiful prison” as construction heritage.

And now, by preserving and utilizing this beautiful construction heritage, there is a plan to reborn it as a hotel, targeting to open in 2021.

Romanesque Style Prison Rebirth as a Hotel

“Former Nara juvenile prison” was built as Nara prison, and it is the only existing building made of red bricks among “five large prisons” built in Meiji Period.

The facility was constructed in Meiji the 41st (1908) for appealing modernization of prisons by Meiji government, and had been used as Nara juvenile prison from Showa 21st (1946).

Though it is said that it is a prison, the construction is quite elaborated, and Mr. Keijiro Yamashita, an engineering official of former Ministry of Justice was in charge for designing.

Massively made of bricks, the building has the arch style front gate with curving dome roofs.

And it is designed that five containment buildings, each two-storied are extended radiatively from the main building.

As more than 100 years had passed since its built, it was reluctantly closed in March 2017, due to the building deterioration.

But, there are many voices for wish to preserve, and the right for operation of the building has been granted to a company that develops nationwide hotel operation.

And then, decided that it will rebirth as “a prison hotel” first in Japan, with attachment of some museums in 2021.

It is expected that it will become “a new sightseeing spots in the old capital, Nara”.

How the prison will be turned as a Hotel

The plan shows that the hotel will be equipped with three different types of accommodation.

The containment buildings will become accommodation facility of about 150 rooms, by removing walls of single cells and ingeniously changing three single cells to one room.

Also, a hotel, from which a guest can view the historical construction, of about 80 rooms will be newly constructed in the ground.

Moreover, a museum about history and roles of Nara prison, a commercial area of selling art crafts and miscellaneous goods of Nara, restaurants, and a spa facility are planned to be attached.

The museum will open in October, 2019, and the complex facility including hotels are scheduled to open in 2021.

A part of demolition work has started in August 2018, and seismic reinforcing works has started in October accordingly.

“Nara hotel”, standing still on heights of Nara park, established as a guest house in Kansai in 1909, and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009.

Since its establishment, the hotel has welcomed domestic and foreign guests of honors, and remains its “hospitality” mind inherited until now.

A constructor representing Meiji and Taisho periods, Mr. Kingo Tatsuno, who designed Tokyo station and the main building of bank of Japan, has designed the main building.

The main building is designed in Momoyama palace style made of Japanese cypress, and its appearance full of massiveness makes a visitor to expect much more for the inside of hotel.

Classic Atmosphere Breathes inside of the Building

Once you step inside, you will feel a space of nostalgic, and your eyes will be attracted with a mantelpiece (a fireplace) with a torii (a Shinto gateway), and big stairs covered with red carpet.

The atmosphere at the time of establishment remains everywhere, and classic elegance breathes.

Forgetting a daily hustle-bustle, you can slowly spend your special time at the hotel with history, and it will produce the fine quality trip for you.

As, such as “Hanayome (a bride)” of Shoen Uemura, exhibited in the front lobby, and some in the landing hall of the second floor, paintings of famous painters are exhibited, you can enjoy appreciating such famous paintings in the hotel.

Postcards of the paintings collection of the hotel are sold at a shop, so why don’t you buy some for memory of your trip?

*Shoen Uemura is a traditional Japanese painter born on April 23 in 1875.

Recommended Guest Room of the Main Building

There are four types of guest rooms, including suites, a deluxe room, a standard room, and a Japanese room, in both main and new buildings.

The main building where you can stay comfortably remains atmosphere of the past, and the new building was built in 1984 by “Yoshino style”, a construction style of Yoshino region in Nara, and both of the buildings are designed with elegance.

If you like to experience classic atmosphere, eventually a guest room of the main building is surely recommended.

The picture shows the standard room (double) of the main building, and the room is equipped with furnishings that make you feel history, such as high ceiling, classic lamps, and a mantelpiece (a fireplace).

Yukata (a Japanese bathrobe) is also prepared, and the pattern of it is deer, and such a pattern may only be seen in local where is famous for deer. (Nara, especially Yoshino, is famous as a living place of deer.)

Taste Traditional Authentic French Cuisine

There are restaurants, the main dining room “Mikasa” and the Japanese restaurant “Hanagiku”.

The main dining room “Mikasa” is spacious and is casually decorated with famous paintings.

Local foodstuffs, such as Yamato chicken and Yamato pork are used, and you can taste traditional French dishes that have been inherited through chefs of successive generations.

You can select one breakfast from three menu, and the most popular is “Chagayu set”, in which you can enjoy the local special dish, “Yamato’s chagayu”.

You can view the Five-Storied Pagoda of the Kohfukuji Temple and Wakakusayama mountain from a large window, and the restaurant is designated as “a restaurant with nice views” selected by Nara prefectural office.

Because the atmosphere, continued since the establishment, is comfortable, the restaurant is also recommended for lunch and dinner of some celebrations like birthdays and wedding anniversaries.

* Chagayu is congee made with brown tea.

A Scenic Spot: The Garden of the former Daijo-in Temple

“A scenic spot: the Garden of the former Daijo-in Temple” attached to the south side of Nara hotel is a strolling spot where you can enjoy landscapes of four seasons.

Daijo-in Temple was built in 1087, and had been flourished during Heian Era through Edo period.

It is one of the Monzeki temples.

It was vanished with the fire attack against the southern capital in 1180, and was relocated to the current place.

It had been existed until ruined in the first year of Meiji period.

* A monzeki temple is a temple headed by a member of the imperial family.

The garden was ruined by a riot during Muromachi era, but was renovated by Zen’ami, a famous person for creating a garden, who created the garden of Ginkakuji temple, who was invited from Kyoto.

After that it had been appreciated as the one of the most beautiful gardens in the southern capital until early Meiji.

From 1995, the excavation works and the restoration works has started in parallel, and the garden has been opened to public since April 2010, with the commemoration of 1300 years of Heijo Sento, the establishment of Nara Heijo capital.

At the End

We have introduced a bit of Nara hotel, and how did you find?

How to access to the hotel is about 8 minutes by car from JR Nara station, and about 5 minutes by car from Kintetsu Nara station.

It takes about 80 minutes by car from Kansai International Airport, and it is also convenient to take a shuttle limousine bus (12 to 13 shuttles daily) from Kansai International Airport to Nara hotel.

Close to Todai-ji Temple, Kohfukuji Temple, Nara National Museum, and Sarusawa Ike pond, and there are many sightseeing spots scattered around the hotel.

Of course, it is good to use the hotel as a base for sightseeing in Nara, but it is also highly recommended a trip mainly to stay at Nara hotel.
The post Trip to Relax at “Nara hotel” with History first appeared on JATRABRIDGE.

A hotel with a theme of “a tea ceremony room that you can stay at” is “hotel zen tokyo”, grand-opened in April 2019 in Nihonbashi.

Japanese modern guest rooms are so stylish spaces that you cannot think that the hotel is a capsule hotel.

The hotel is perfectly equipped with a work lounge convenient for working and with a bar lounge for enjoying Japanese sake and cocktails made with Japanese liquor.

The hotel looks a bit different from existing capsule hotels, so you may feel easy to stay at both for business and for sightseeing.

*A capsule hotel is an accommodation facility looks like capsules are in a row, where guests have a privacy in a capsule.

It was unique in Japan before, but now a hotel in such style is spreading to the world.

Hotel Uesed to be a “Prison” in Nara

A hotel here is the Japan’s first “the prison hotel”, attached with some museums which will be open 2021.

What becomes a hotel is “former Nara juvenile prison” in Nara city, Nara prefecture, built in Meiji period, and it is designated as the National important cultural treasure.

Built in Romanesque style, the prison is called as “an excessively beautiful prison” as construction heritage.

Although there still are some years until opening, the hotel is expected to become a new sightseeing spot in the old capital Nara.

We are very looking forward to opening, aren’t’ we?

What Do you imagine when you hear “Nara”?

Most of people would imagine deers or buddha even they are Japanese.

In fact, I also imagine so until February in 2019.

When I was on the way to return to Kyoto from Nara by Kintetsu Line, fire works and the mountain which was burning come into my sight.

That made me surprised because in Japan, fire works festivals are generally held in summer night and literary the mountain was burning.

Hotels and Restaulants to See Fireworks in Nara

Mt.Wakakusa is near Todai-ji Temple and Nara Station of Kintetsu line.

Basically, you can see from everywhere around Nara Station.

Good place is for example, Nara Park where it takes 20 minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara Station and 10 minutes by bus.

Since food stalls are in the park, you can enjoy both view and foods.

Why Do They Burn Mt.Wakakusa

image by blogs.yahoo.co.jp/k_shumatsu note:Fireworks and mountains are composite photo

It is said that Mt.Wakakusa burning began from Edo era(around 1700).

There are some theories why they burn Mt.Wakakusa.

To Calm the Soul of Tomb

One is that to calm the soul of the Uguisuzuka Tomb on the summit of Mt.Wakakusa.

Japan used to have a habit to bury the king or person who had power on the summit in the region.

People had been burning Mt.Wakakusa in every year as a ceremony.

So it can be thought that burning Mt.Wakakusa used to be like a memorial ceremony of Hiroshima which is held every year to commemorate.

For Amulet

It was believed that cow-demon would come if Mt.Wakakusa wasn’t burned.

This legend was found in the ”Nanto annual event” written by a Murai Furumichi a doctor in 1740.

Since people near the Mt.Wakakusa were afraid of attacking by cow-demon, it they began to burn the mountain.

But, it’s not sure why burning the mountain prevents attack by cow-demon.

Meaning of Lunching Fire Works

Fire works was originally lunched for a signal to ignite mountain.

So, the number of fire works was not so a lot before.

But, now its meaning is currently including tourism festival and the number of fire work lunched is more than 600.

Note that since fire works are lunched first, you can’t take photo of mountain burning and fire works at the same time.

Now It’s Festival for Tourism

In 1900, Mt.Wakakusa Burn of the purpose began to change.

It is said that Mt.Wakakusa was burned in daytime, but now mountain is burned at night.

So, Mt.Wakakusa Burn turned into festival for sightseeing purpose.

In a sense, it’s interesting that although the event and what people do hasn’t been changed, the purpose is different.

Searching what the festival means is hard to make sense now, but is interesting.
The post Nara in Japan: Winter Fireworks and Mt.Wakakusa Burn first appeared on JATRABRIDGE.
