However, the number of restaurants that serve fried shrimps as a Nagoya specialty are increasing.

The punchy specialty of “Ebi Dote”

In Nagoya, the bigger the fried shrimp, the higher the reputation of the restaurant.

However, the number of restaurants that specialize in fried shrimp is less than that of other Nagoya-style food restaurants.

Jumbo fried shrimp is currently served at tonkatsu and Japanese and Western restaurants as a specialty.

Against this backdrop, Ebi Dote Shokudo which opened four years ago in the Nagoya Station Shinkansen underground shopping mall, is the only fried shrimp specialty restaurant in Nagoya.

A huge shrimp fly object is dawn from the ceiling!

Even on weekdays, the place is crowded with businessmen on a business trip to Nagoya.

After finishing their work in Nagoya, they come to eat “Ebi Dote” which is the name of the restaurant.(6 pieces, ¥853 or more)

The freshly fried shrimp are dipped in a bowl of Dote-Miso, which is made mellow by adding a beaten egg to the mix.

By the way, the fried shrimps are made from the banana shrimp.

The sweetness of the shrimp is brought out by Dote Miso.

This menu breaks the Japanese stereotype that fried shrimp must be served with tartar or Worcester sauce.

For lunch, they also offer the “Shrimp Dote Lunch” (1,382 yen), which comes with rice, miso soup and pickles.

Excellent tartar sauce made on the spot

In Nagoya, size is the most important when it comes to fried shrimps.

So we ordered the fried shrimp set meal (usually 1,814 yen, 1,598 yen for lunch).

And what came out was the photo above.

Two extra-large flied shrimps were sitting on the plate.

The size of the extra-large fried shrimp is more than 20 cm.

Yes, it was big enough.

This is a satisfying meal.

You can eat it with Worcestershire sauce, but what you should pay attention to is the tartar sauce.

The tartar sauce at this restaurant is made on that table by crushing sliced boiled eggs.

Plenty of freshly made tartar sauce on the fried shrimp enhances the sweetness and plumpness of the shrimp.

I can’t stop eating!

What is the size of shrimps?

As we were enjoying the plump, XL sized shrimp, the Mayumi Fujita, a chief of the restaurant grinned at us and said a few words.

You shouldn’t be surprised by this.

Actually, we have more than this. (Fujita)

When I looked at her, there was a huge piece of fried shrimp in her hands, and shrimp was protruding from the plate

What is this?

This is our specialty: “Japan’s best! It’s an extra-large fried shrimp!” (Fujita)

Japan’s best! Extra-large fried shrimp~ (single item: 2,354 yen, set meal: 2,764 yen)

It was too big to fit on the plate, and it just stuck out!

How big is it…..

Actually, there is a scale written on the chopstick bag, and you can measure the length of the shrimp.

It was 35 cm long!

I’ve seen many fried shrimps in the past, but never such a big one.

It is definitely the biggest fried shrimp in Nagoya, or even in Japan.

We sometimes see fried shrimp 20 or more centimeters in length, but we wanted to produce something so big that our customers would be surprised.

We looked around a lot and finally found a shrimp called a sea tiger, which is a member of the prawn family and is caught in the East China Sea.

Every time we brought it to tables, customers get surprised and say “Oh!“(laugh)

A lot of customers are taking pictures with their phones in hand (Fujita).

It’s also unique that it’s not cut into pieces so that you can enjoy its size.

When you eat it, you should either take a bite of it or cut it off with the scissors provided with chopsticks.

The taste is like it’s not so tasty, but you can never eat the moist texture in other shrimps.

However, as I’ve said many times, in Nagoya, it’s all about the size of the fried shrimp!

Store Information And Access

Ebi Dote Shokudo is in “Esca underground shopping area” in JR Nagoya Station.

It takes about 2 minutes on foot from the west exit of JR Nagoya Station.
Follow the signs of Esca from the Shinkansen station gates, take just a few steps out of the Taikoo-guchi exit and immediately take the escalator down to the basement.
Then, you can get Esca.

Known for its wide variety of dishes, from eye-catching menu to the exciting flavors, Nagoya meshi(food) add nice experience on your sightseeing in Aichi.

I’ show a list of dishes “you’ll regret if you don’t eat”!

Here are some of Nagoya’s best local gourmet dishes.

Seeing is believing, so let’s try it first!

1: Hitsumabushi

The fragrant smell is mouth watering! Extravagant Nagoya rice!

The first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Nagoya meshi” is Hitsumabushi.

It’s a luxurious dish of beautifully chopped and baked eel, spread all over a rice table, but what’s worth mentioning is the way to eat.

Eat it as it is, with condiments, or with ochazuke (rice with tea), and you can enjoy it three times for one meal.

The Representativeof Nagoya meshi! Atsuta Houraiken Honten

Atsuta Houraiken is a long-established restaurant where people are always waiting in line.

Their signature dish, Hitsumabushi, is a masterpiece with traditionally mild sauce and fragrantly grilled eel.

Exciting food that was born and raised in Nagoya

We are in “Nagoya”, but do we need to eat Taiwanese Food?

Yes, “Taiwanese Ramen“, born in Nagoya and popular for its stimulating taste, is the Nagoya food.

The noodles are topped with a heaping pile of minced meat, chives, and hot peppers, and the ramen has become a Nagoya specialty.

Many people are addicted to the spiciness of this ramen.

Addictive spiciness! Original Taiwanese Ramen “Misen” JR Nagoya Station

The “Taiwanese Ramen” that you have to sweat on your forehead as you fight against the spiciness originated at Misen.

The chicken broth with lots of chili peppers and garlic and the taste of minced meat combine to create a dish that will make you feel like you are in for a real treat.

What is Hitsumabushi?

Rice is spread over a Ohitsu (a special bowl) and grilled and chopped eel is placed on top of it.

You eat it mixed with rice and eel.

It is the feature that you change way to eat as you go along first, second and third.

How to eat Hitsuzumabushi for three times

hitsumabushi is a dish of thin, savory unagi (eel) carved into strips and served on a bed of rice. The most distinctive feature of hitsumabushi is the way it is eaten. Here are some of the most common ways to eat Hitsumabushi.

How to Eat Hitsumabushi

I found good explanation:How to eat HITSUMABUSHI

For the first set, enjoy the taste of the dish as it is.

The second set is accented with green onions and wasabi on top.

For the third set, the condiments and chopped seaweed are topped on top of the second set and dashi is poured over the top, making it “unachazuke“!

The combination of the unagi fat, the excellent sauce, and the mildly fragrant dashi broth makes it easy to forget that this is the third meal, and it sits so smoothly in your stomach.

For the last meal, you can choose the way you feel the most delicious among the three.

By adding a variety of flavors, you can eat hitsumabushi without even bothering.

Enjoying every last bite, this is the Nagoya way!

No.4 Hitsumabushi Nagoya Binchou Lasik / Sakae Area

With its golden glow and fragrant smell, it will impress you like never before.

The reason why hitsumabushi Nagoya Binchou is so delicious is because it is the ultimate in grille.

Eels are grilled over high heat using binchotan charcoal without the steaming process, and the fragrant, elastic flesh and crispy skin will delight your thirst.

The new rice, which would be a feast in itself, and the slightly thicker sauce made with Aichi’s finest Tamari Shoyu (soy sauce) and mirin, which are the pride of the local area, and the eels, which are carefully selected by the chef, are all part of this magnificent collaboration.

The combination of these two ingredients makes for a dish that needs no explanation.

Access to Sakushima Island

Sakushima is a remote island located in Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, and can be reached by boat from Isshiki Port in Nishio City.

The address of Isshiki Port is 176 Koyubunen Koto, Isshiki-cho, Nishio City.

Isshiki Port is close to the Fish Morning Market, and free parking is available in front of the market (You don’t have to use the morning market).

Next to the morning market is a fish and shellfish shopping and restaurant.

There is a “Isshiki Sakana Hiroba“, which seems to be quite busy on weekends.

There are seven ferry services a day, the earliest one leaving at 6:30 and arriving at Sakushima (East Port) at 7:00.

Here is the timetable of ferry and bus which I translated from Japanese site.

The boat seems to have a capacity of more than 100 people, so it doesn’t seem to be over capacity on a normal weekend.

However, I heard that it might be crowded during Golden Week holidays.

In fact, the boat was over capacity when I visited.

When that happens, there will be increase in the number of boats on the island.

Those who cross to the island by bus or train need to be careful (it’s a good idea to line up at the port a little early).

There are two boat docks on the island, West Port and East Port.

You can encounter cats in the villages around both ports.

It takes about 20 minutes to get from West Port to East Port on foot, and about 10 minutes by rented bicycle.

Cats around East Port of Sakushima

Since I stayed at a guest house in East Port, I got off at East Port (the last stop was East Port) and started to explore.

It was very windy, so I walked but couldn’t find the cat for the first hour or so.

After collecting information from the people of the island, I found that the cats on Sakushima seem to gather in a specific house.

In Sanagi Island(in Kagawa) and Manabe Island(in Okayama), if you stroll around the island, you’ll see many cats, but on Sakushima Island, things are a little different.

There are cats on the island, but you’ll almost always see them in yards where residents live.

They are quite close to their own cats.

It seems there are a lot of cases where they are being fed in the yard as shown in the picture.

A resident said:

I don’t have a cat, but the cats took up residence on their own while I was feeding them

I managed to get permission from the house where the cat is staying to start taking photos.

I couldn’t take pictures of the cats staying in the garden, so I took pictures of the cat playing in the garden quietly from a distance.

I was keenly aware of how lucky I was to have brought my telephoto lens.

Many of the houses have beautiful flowers growing in them, so you can take lots of pictures of flowers and cats.

There were still some small cats playing around, and I got some great shots of them.

One of the cats, who appeared in “The Island of Cats,” posed for a picture.

I heard that this cat was walking on his owner’s shoulder.

I took a picture of cat actually getting on the owner.

Foods and Guest Houses in East Port

I got the impression that there are a lot of guest houses and restaurants in Higashiko(East Port).

The sashimi set meal I had for lunch was freshly caught flounder, sea cucumbers, octopus, etc. and priced at 1,200 yen!

By the way, the guest house I stayed at was called Ichibei, and it was just under 8,000 yen for one night and two meals.

I ate a lot of seafood such as crab, octopus, sashimi and boiled fish.

The dish in the photo comes with a small boiled octopus and clams.

The bike rentals were free and they kept our luggage at times other than check in and check out.

Cats around Sakushima West Port

The area around West port is dotted with art galleries such as “Ohirune House” and stylish cafes that have been renovated from old houses, and it’s a bit of a fashionable town.

Photo above is the “Ohirune House”.

It looks nice if you take a nap while listening to the sound of the ocean.

Like at East Port, I didn’t see any cats walking around the town or the port area, but rather they seemed to be hanging out in private house’s yards or near the entrance.

You can’t go into private house’s yards to take photos without permission, so I had to ask permission from the owners of private homes to take photos here as well.

There was a young cat who loved to play.

I wanted to keep photographing him because his every gesture was so cute, but he still went into private house’s yards.

Feeling the frustration of not being able to shoot as much as I would like, I tried to look for cats again.

It’s not that there are no cats in town.

However, the cats you see occasionally are wary and you can’t approach them easily.

The friendly cats go into private house’s.

It’s a little different from Sanyu Island and Manabe Island, where many cats don’t go into houses.

The picture is near the harbor where the fishermen’s boats dock in the west harbor. I expected to see a cat holding a fish, but I could not find the cat itself. Too bad.

Summary of Cats in Sakushima

Sakushima Island is a little different from the other cat islands.

Point

There are cats in both the east and west ports, but most of them are in private house’s yard or front door, so it can be difficult to find them (if you can’t find them, you can ask the residents to help).

It is safer to ask permission from the people living in the house or the neighbors before taking photos.

As you can’t go into someone’s yard or property, it’s best to bring a telephoto lens with you.

It can be very crowded on holidays, so if the boat is full, line up early at the pier.

Lastly, the most friendly cat in a village in East Port.

Some of the cafes are also known as the original maid cafes.

In this article, I’ll take a look at five such maid cafes in Osu.

There are many maid cafes that even beginners will want to visit while sightseeing!

M’s Melody

The birthplace of ‘Welcome back, Master!’

Speaking of a maid cafe, the first thing you hear when you enter is “Welcome back, Master”.

This maid cafe is the birthplace of the greeting, and as it is a well-established maid cafe that has been in business since 2002, it is recommended for those who want to enjoy the standard first.

Since it is an orthodox maid cafe, the interior of the store has a calm impression.

Of course, there is also a service such as drawing a picture on omu-rice, so communication with the maid is also perfect.

There are a lot of events and many variations of uniforms , so you may see different costumes every time you go!

Noritake Garden, a complex facility for ceramics has a “Kraft Center” that allows visitors to observe the manufacturing process.

On the first floor, they introduce the process of fabric production by pouring molding from “prototype production” to “glazed firing.”

On the second floor, you can see a variety of painting tasks, such as drawing methods and drawings by skilled craftsmen.

The “Picture Experience Corner (charged)” is also available, and it is a facility where both adults and children can enjoy the beauty of ceramics, such as knowing and creating them.

The 3rd and 4th floors are the Noritake Museum, which contains the Old Noritake.

Know about “Bone China” and the “Manufacturing Process”!

A type of porcelain, bone china, developed at the end of the 18th century in the United Kingdom, comes from the name of china, which uses ash of bovine bone as its raw material.

On the first floor of the Kraft Center, you can check the flow of “prototyping,” “molding,” “firing,” and “glazing” in the Bone China manufacturing process.

The following is a simple process.

First, clay was used to form a temporary mold using gypsum to make a prototype. From there, use molds are made.

Long stones, silica, kaolin, clay are finely divided, bone ash and water are added, and muddy mud is called “deisho”.

The mud is poured into a gypsum mold and “molded.

“Remove the mold and assemble the parts into a single shape.

Next, assemble, smooth the joints and adhesive surfaces, and bake the first time to bake (“Tightening”), and apply a layer of glaze (Yuyaku) to the surface with a spray to give gloss (“Glazed”). )) And then the second baking (“glazing”)

Artistic beauty of the “figurians,” such as the hero Perseus and the gold Killer whale(shachihoko)

Like the owl mentioned above, Noritake’s lineup includes not only tableware but also figurines called “figurian” figurines.

This approach to the artworks enhances Noritake’s formative power and feeds back into the tableware.

“Figurians” representing one scene of Perseus, the hero of the Greek myth, are full of excitement and pressure, so please check them.

This Killer whale(shachihoko) is made in a quarter of the size of the real thing in Nagoya Castle.

In order to commemorate the friendly city alliance with Nanjing, China, the city of Nagoya produces fine ceramic gold shachihoko.

The city of Nagoya presented a male to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their friendship city relationship in 2003, and a female to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their friendship city relationship in 2008.

By the way, this Shachihoko is still white, but there is gold leaf on the surface of the gifted one.

A series of small discoveries! Repeated “firing”

After that, the artisans on the second floor drew pictures and applied them using transfer paper, which was printed with ceramic paints and covered with a thin film of resin.

This is followed by a “gold finish firing” in which gold lines are drawn on the handles of the cups and the edges of the plates.

Depending on the “painting” method, the number of firing times is increased.

In “gold finishing,” gold dyes are not used from the beginning.

Instead, after the firing process called “gold firing,” there are a number of small discoveries, such as bright gold colors, that make the manufacturing process fun.

With the long process described above, the finished products are sent to the dealer after a strict quality check using visual, tactile, and auditory skills.

Memo

firing: Heat to increase hardness and adjust color tone in the ceramic manufacturing process.

“artisan’s demonstration” and “painting experience corner”

On the second floor, you can see the craftsmen’s skills in front of you.

This is a rare opportunity to appreciate the technique not through glass, but in the same space where there is only a low partition.

Don’t miss the brightly colored platters and flower vases in the back of the room.

In some cases, you may be able to appreciate a very rare product.

When you see these manufacturing processes and the skills of the craftsmen, you may want to experience them.

There is also a “painting experience corner” on the second floor.

You can participate without a reservation and the fee starts at 1,800 yen.

Why not create your own unique piece of art with your child?

For those who are interested in trying to paint, the Noritake Artists Club offers classes in Aichi, Nagoya, and Akasaka, Tokyo.

Please check the link to the official site.

Overview of the first and second floors of Noritake Garden “Craft Center” in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture

After checking the manufacturing process of ceramics on the first and second floors of the Craft Center in Noritake Garden, let’s go to the Noritake Museum on the third and fourth floors where the early Noritake products “Old Noritake” are stored.

This ticket is the same as the Kraft Center, so you can see the ticket as it is.

With more knowledge, you can enjoy deeper and more noritake products.

That’s all of my introduction of the Kraft Center, a Noritake Garden in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, where visitors can see the techniques and traditions of Noritake and experience painting.

SEDAN, Japan’s first dinner set

With great difficulty in manufacturing white hard porcelain, Morimura Ichizaemon established a joint Japanese ceramic company (now Noritake Company Limited).

However, there remained a major challenge in creating a uniform plate that was essential for the dinner set.

The 25 cm dinner plate didn’t have a flat bottom and couldn’t have a uniform shape.

In 1913, they completed a 25-centimeter dinner set for Pure White, taking approximately 10 years from the founding of the Nippon Pottery Gomei Co., Ltd. through the research and development of Western dishes with different basic characteristics from Japanese tableware.

The first dinner set in Japan was named SEDAN and began exporting in 1914.

In the first year, only 20 sets were shipped, but in four years, approximately 40,000 sets were shipped, and the company began to make a leap to the world as a Western dish brand.

Performance of art director, Magobe Okura

Some have supported the founder, Ichizaemon Morimura, and have been active as current art director.

This was Okura Magobe, who ran a publishing company that sold books for the masses, mainly pictures from the Edo period, called Ezoshi.

Mainly dealing with multicolored ukiyo-e prints and Nishiki-e, Nishibei, whose aesthetic sense has been refined, tried switching to Western-style paintings for craftsmen who specialize in Japanese painting.

The artisans, who were initially opposed to the idea, incorporated traditional techniques into their Western-style paintings and created their own designs.

On the 4th floor and in the exhibition room, a stand-alone display table is set to view vases from all directions.

You can fully enjoy the “old noritake” exported to Europe and the United States from the late Meiji era to the end of World War II.

In addition, there is also a panel that describes the details of the history of the “Old Noritake” back seal, which is full of highlights.

Designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright

The American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), one of the masters of modern architecture.

Wright was involved in the construction of the Imperial Hotel in Japan, the villa of Yamamura Tazaemon, the residence of Jiyu Gakuen Tomorrow, and the residence of Hayashi Aisaku.

He was involved in the design of a new hotel building (Wright Museum) that was completed in 1923, and also designed decorations, furniture, and tableware inside the building.

These dished were designed by Wright for restaurants in the hotel.

The design of the stained glass used for the interior of the building was adopted, and although there were some design changes, it was used until the Light Museum was closed in 1967 (Showa 42), but after that the material was changed and reprinted.

However, it has been loved until now.

“Baseball God” sign

This was signed when Babe Ruth visited Japan as a member of the Major League Selection Team for U.S.-Japan Baseball in 1934.

November 21, 1934, is the day after a game at the Kusanagi Stadium in Shizuoka, Japan, where Eiji Sawamura (17 years old at the time), who would later become the ace of the Giants, struck out a major league batter.

Summary of the Noritake Museum

The Noritake Museum is a place where you can enjoy a number of collections that have adopted various styles, including curving Art Nouveau using plant patterns and linear and geometric pattern Art Deco, and reflecting the fashion of each era in the design. .

This is a typical technique for three-dimensionally expressing the surface of ceramics, and you can fully appreciate the works woven by technology and art, such as the luxurious “Mori-raising” that is a characteristic of “Old Noritake”.

There are also special exhibitions, so please check from the official website.

A place recommended for many people, such as those who like art, those who are involved in “manufacturing” such as design, and those who are looking for new inspiration.

That’s all of the introduction of the “Noritake Museum” in “Noritake Garden” in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture.
The post Enjoy “Old Noritake” at the Noritake Museum! first appeared on JATRABRIDGE.
