In recent years, Japan’s “Cat Islands” (Nekojima), introduced on overseas social media and in foreign media, have captivated cat lovers worldwide. Many international visitors come to these islands seeking encounters with adorable cats. However, a cat island is not merely a tourist destination; it is a “place of life” where cats and island residents coexist peacefully.

To protect the environment where cats can live safely and to respect the lives of the islanders, it is extremely important for us visitors to know and observe the correct manners and etiquette. This article provides a comprehensive explanation of the 7 essential etiquette rules you must know before visiting and the must-have items to bring, to ensure your trip to a cat island is fun, safe, and memorable for both cats and humans. Please read on to help make your wonderful encounters with cats a reality!

Why are Manners Important When Visiting a Cat Island? [For Both Cats and the Island]

Cat islands are precious places where cats live freely in a near-natural state. Furthermore, on many islands, aging residents carefully watch over the cats as part of their daily lives. Disorderly behavior by tourists can harm the cats’ health, degrade the island’s environment, and even threaten the livelihoods of the islanders. Observing proper manners is essential for the cats to continue living happily and for the islands to remain attractive tourist destinations in the future.

Why Manners Are Important

For the health and safety of cats: Improper feeding and excessive contact can harm cats.

For the environmental preservation of the island: Littering and excrement cause landscape and hygiene problems.

To respect the lives of island residents: Spend time quietly and be considerate of private spaces.

For sustainable tourism: Good manners ensure the island’s appeal for the future.

7 Etiquette Rules to Observe When Visiting a Cat Island [Beware of Absolute NO-GOs!]

To have the best time with the cats on a cat island, be sure to follow these 7 etiquette rules:

1. Feeding cats is generally prohibited!

On most cat islands, feeding cats is prohibited in principle. Disorderly feeding by tourists can harm the cats’ health, lead to cats gathering excessively and fighting, and cause droppings to pollute the island’s environment. Even if feeding is permitted on an island, always follow the designated locations and methods. Absolutely do not give any food you brought without permission.

2. Do not force contact with cats! Do not chase or pick them up.

Cats are very delicate creatures. Forcing contact, chasing, or picking them up can cause them stress and may lead to scratches or bites. If a cat approaches you, gently pet it and respect the cat’s pace.

3. Take all your trash home! There are almost no trash cans on the islands.

Most cat islands do not have proper trash disposal facilities. Take everything you bring with you (leftover food, drink containers, snack wrappers, etc.) back home. Absolutely do not discard anything on the island, especially items that cats might accidentally ingest.

4. Do not speak loudly or make noise! Spend time quietly.

Cats are sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements. Also, cat islands are places where island residents live. Do not shout or run around; enjoy the cats and the island’s atmosphere quietly. If you remain quiet, cats may naturally approach you.

5. Do not enter private property or residential areas.

Cats may be relaxing on private property or in gardens, but these are the private spaces of the island residents. Absolutely refrain from entering without permission or peeking into windows. Be especially careful in areas where warning signs are posted.

6. Bringing pets other than cats (especially dogs) is strictly prohibited!

On cat islands, bringing pets other than cats (such as dogs) is strictly prohibited to protect the cat ecosystem and the island’s environment. This is to avoid stress for the cats and to prevent the risk of infectious diseases.

7. Always check boat operation information in advance.

Access to cat islands is solely by ferry. It is not uncommon for services to be canceled due to weather or sea conditions. Always check the latest operation information on the official website of the ferry company for the cat island you plan to visit before departing. This is especially important during winter and typhoon seasons.

Essential Packing List for Visiting a Cat Island [For a Comfortable Trip]

Cat islands, unlike typical tourist destinations, often have very limited restaurants and shops. To enjoy your cat island visit comfortably, we strongly recommend preparing the following items:

Essential Packing List

Dogo Onsen has a history of about 3,000 years and is said to have been visited by Okuninushi no Mikoto and Prince Shotoku.

The location of Dogo Onsen is also attractive for its easy accessibility, being only about 40 minutes from Matsuyama Airport by limousine bus.

The quality of the spring is smooth and mildly alkaline, which is said to be suitable for hot-spring cures and beauty treatments.

The symbolic public bathhouse “Dogo Onsen Honkan*” is one of the important cultural properties of Japan, and in 2017, “Dogo Onsen Annex Asukan-no-Yusen,” a bathhouse inspired by the Asuka period, opened, allowing visitors to soak in an open-air bath that is not available in the main building.

There are also several hand baths and foot baths in the hot spring resort area, perfect for taking a break during a stroll.

The Dogo Onsen Honkan is closed from January 15, 2019 for conservation and repair work on the second floor and above, but you can still take a bath in the first floor “Kami-no-yu” (divine hot spring).

On both sides of the “365-step stone staircase,” a well-known symbol of the area, there are hot spring inns, restaurants, and amusement facilities such as target practice, giving the area a rich hot spring atmosphere! There is also “Kawaga Bridge,” famous for its beautiful autumn leaves, “Ikaho Onsen Yumisensho,” where you can drink hot spring water, “Ikaho Shrine,” and “Ikaho Ropeway,” among many other attractions.

Koiwai Farm is also known as a famous cherry blossom spot in Iwate Prefecture, and it is usually viewed during the Golden Week period.

This is a spot for people who like flowers, who are proud of flowers of various kinds throughout the year of spring, summer, and winter, to visit once.

Nemofila enters such a national Hitachi Kaihin Park from mid-April to early May.

The scenery where the hills are dyed vivid blue, and the sky blue and the sea blue are perfectly blended is amazing.

Please enjoy the world of Nemophila in a pleasant climate

Shiba cherry trees planted on one side of the vast site in Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, are famous for flowering from mid-April to early May, and they are welcomed around the Golden Week.

The pink color of turf cherry blossoms is bright and pretty, and you can feel spring.

The Shiba Cherry Festival will be held from April 17 (Friday) to May 6 (Wednesday), 2020.

It’s also a good thing to be able to see nine different types of turf cherry blossoms from dark pink to light pink at a time.

Each petal has a pretty shape like a heart, so please watch it carefully.

Beautiful Forest / Niigata Prefecture

“Beauty Forest” is a beech forest with a tree age of approximately 100 years in Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture.

This forest was cut once in the early Showa period, but it grew again at the same time and appeared straight and beautiful, so it became known as the Beautiful Forest.

Now it is one of Niigata Prefecture’s famous sightseeing spots.

Autumn is a beautiful forest with red leaves, winter is a snow scenery on one side, and seasonally varies in appearance.

By the time of Golden Week, you can see beautiful new greenery. The scene of beech forests in mirror-like ponds is fantastic and cannot help but take pictures.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route / Toyama Prefecture

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route is a mountain tourist route that connects Toyama Prefecture and Nagano Prefecture.

Various vehicles, such as buses, cable cars, and ropeways, can be used to enjoy the natural beauty of the Northern Alps.

Because of the snow cover in winter, the entire line will normally open around mid-April (in 2020, from April 15 (Wednesday) to November 30 (Monday)).

The spot here is the “Otani of Snow.

“The walls of large snow created by removing snow from heavy snowfall zones, which cover about 6 to 8 meters of snow every year, are covered with pressure.

At the Otani Festival in Kurobe, Tateyama (Wednesday, April 15, 2020 to Monday, June 22), you can walk between the walls of the snow, so please experience nature in the near future.

Hanamomo no Sato/Nagano Prefecture

“Hanamomo no Sato” is a spot where people can enjoy flower peach in Achi Village, Nagano Prefecture.

Flower peach is an ornamental peach that flowers from mid-April to mid-May.

Here are the three-colored peaches blooming in red and white pink, showing us a beautiful gradient.

At Tsukigawa Onsen Sato Hanamomo no Sato, you can enjoy peach while walking.

The Flower Peach Festival was held from Saturday, April 18 to Wednesday, May 6, 2020, to sell local agricultural products and processed goods.

There’s also a drive course called “Hanamomo kaido,” and you can enjoy it from the car window.

Serakogen Farm / Hiroshima

At the Serakogen Hiroshima Farm in Hiroshima Prefecture, you can enjoy cherry blossoms, tulips, sunflowers, and other seasonal flowers in spring.

The Tulip Festival, held on Wednesday, April 15-Sunday, May 17, 2020, is now full of colorful tulips such as red, yellow, and white.

Japan’s largest tulip festival using about 750,000 tulips is truly photogenic.

Since the design varies every year, I’d like to visit you many times.

There are many events such as stamp rallies and rice cakes during the Golden Week, so please check them again.

Niyodogawa/Kochi Pref

The Niyodo River, which flows through Kochi Prefecture, originates in Ehime Prefecture and is one of the three major rivers in Shikoku, along with the Shimanto River and the Yoshino River.

The more highly transparent the water quality ranking in Japan, the more beautiful blue is called “Niyodo Blue.”

Among the many scenic spots, the most recommended is Nikobuchi, which is located upstream of the river.

The waters flow vigorously from the waterfalls, forming mysterious waterfalls.

When you come around lunchtime, the sun reflects on the water, and you can see a vivid blue illusion.

Kawauchi Fujien / Fukuoka Prefecture

Kawauchi Fujien, located in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is famous for enjoying brilliant purple Fuji(wisteria), and many tourists, both in Japan and overseas, visit the site.

Wisteria is around to be seen from late April to early May, and it coincides with the Golden Week period, so it is a spot that I would like to go there once.

The most obvious thing here is the Wisteria tunnel, which appears as soon as you enter.

You can see the flowers of various kinds and colors.

In order to avoid congestion, tickets are required to be purchased at a convenience store based on pre-booking.

If you visit, please prepare a ticket early.

It is a sandy beach that usually appears only in the dry season from spring to summer.

The scene of a white sandy beach floating on a highly transparent sea is truly scenic.

It’s also valuable and exciting to see where you don’t always see it.

Collaboration between the blue sky and the white sand, the emerald green sea, is breathtaking.

It is said that picking up only a few stars’ sand will make you happy. The official “Yolrn Island Tourism Guide” contains information about the high incidence of tide level predictions, so please refer to them for your plan.

Cats who are popular on SNS sometimes become souvenir goods or become stationmasters all over the Japan

There may be many cat lovers who want to be swung around by so-called “Tsundere”(hot and cold) cats.

A writer of this article(namely, it’s me) is one of cat lovers.

There are many spots where such cute cats become a sign of the hotels.

“A ranking of cats who attract guest in accommodation” was decided by Rakuten Travel, a Japanese travel reservation site.

Let me introduce top 5 hotels that have cute welcoming cats.

5th “Kou” at Farm Minshuku Nyamba One in Kagoshima

Gathered 179 votes and ranked 5th is “Kou” at Farm Minshuku Nyamba One.

Surprisingly, Kou is 17 years old right now(2019/4).

It seems that Kou have been a lost kitten, but his proud is well-groomed fur.

Kou has a partner cat, “Fuku”.

So, putting two together, the name is Kou-Fuku which means happiness in Japanese.

*Kou is left and Fuku is in right in the photo above.

Usually tourists misunderstand that they are parent and child, but there is no blood relationship between the 2 cats…

Nyamba One boasts a spacious Japanese-style room of 12 tatami mats (can be used in two rooms with 6 tatami mats) with a retro atmosphere decorated with uchikake(Kimono), obi, and folk art chest.

The owner is a woman, and she began running Farm Minshuku in Kagoshima with her husband after worked for some years.

Beside 2 cats, Farm Minshuku has a dog, so the inn is paradise for animal lovers.

But, that’s not always true.

Staying unique and unusual hotel is also fun and gives us awesome experience.

So, let me introduce such hotels in Japan.

Hotel Zen Nihonbashi, Tokyo

A hotel with a theme of “a tea ceremony room that you can stay at” is “hotel zen tokyo”, grand-opened in April 2019 in Nihonbashi.

Japanese modern guest rooms are so stylish spaces that you cannot think that the hotel is a capsule hotel.

The hotel is perfectly equipped with a work lounge convenient for working and with a bar lounge for enjoying Japanese sake and cocktails made with Japanese liquor.

The hotel looks a bit different from existing capsule hotels, so you may feel easy to stay at both for business and for sightseeing.

*A capsule hotel is an accommodation facility looks like capsules are in a row, where guests have a privacy in a capsule.

It was unique in Japan before, but now a hotel in such style is spreading to the world.

Hotel Uesed to be a “Prison” in Nara

A hotel here is the Japan’s first “the prison hotel”, attached with some museums which will be open 2021.

What becomes a hotel is “former Nara juvenile prison” in Nara city, Nara prefecture, built in Meiji period, and it is designated as the National important cultural treasure.

Built in Romanesque style, the prison is called as “an excessively beautiful prison” as construction heritage.

Although there still are some years until opening, the hotel is expected to become a new sightseeing spot in the old capital Nara.

We are very looking forward to opening, aren’t’ we?

Soon to open a hotel where you can stay in “a prison” of Meiji period!

Recently, there is increasing tendency that a foreign tourist loves more to experience real Japanese culture than to travel around Japan’s famous sightseeing spots.

A hotel that meets such a demand is “SEKAI HOTEL” opened in Higashi-Osaka city.
